Abstract: For a fixed group G and a generating set S, and let c(n) be the number of words of length n in S which evaluate to the identity in G. A wide variety of results relate the properties of this sequence to those of the underlying group. In this talk, we will present our results that these sequences can be ill-behaved even for nilpotent groups (https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.09419). This is joint work with Igor Pak.
