Luke D. Lavis was born and raised in Ruch, OR and earned his BS in Chemistry at Oregon
State University in 2000, performing undergraduate research with James D. White.
Uncertain about research vs. medicine, he spent four years in industry, working at
Molecular Probes (Eugene, OR) and Molecular Devices (Sunnyvale, CA). Luke then
attended University of Wisconsin–Madison and earned his PhD in 2008 working with
Ronald T. Raines. Continuing his atypical career path, Dr. Lavis immediately started his
independent career as a Group Leader at the HHMI’s Janelia Research Campus and was
promoted to Senior Group Leader and Head of Molecular Tools and Imaging in 2017.
