About this Event
Join the Africana Research Cluster, Media as SocioTechnical Systems, and the Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies for Dr. Kamille Gentles-Peart's talk on her current scholarship and intellectual journey centering on Black women’s embodied resilience and resistance. "Chasing Nanny of the Maroons: Exploring Black Women’s Defiance of White Body Supremacy," will illustrate how Black Caribbean women experience racism through their bodies and how these experiences are a perpetual source of racial trauma in their lives. Additionally, the ways that Black women decolonize their bodies and make life on their own terms will also be discussed.
Dr. Gentles-Peart's scholarship looks at how anti-black racism is perpetrated on and through the bodies of Black Caribbean women and their strategies for liberation. She is the author of Romance With Voluptuousness: Caribbean Women and Thick Bodies in the U.S., which looks at the challenges that Black women from the Caribbean face when pursuing curvy bodies in the U.S. She co-founded the Collaborative for the Research on Black Women and Girls, which is committed to restoring and healing Black women and girls globally. She is also a faculty fellow at the New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE).
