About this Event
In this rare opportunity to step into a USC classroom, join Institute Deputy Director, Dr. Shushan Karapetian, and her students in the MDA 330 - Armenian Heritage: History, Arts, & Culture course for a special set of visually enriching talks on Armenian letter culture, calligraphy, and design. Ruben Malayan, an award-winning art director, calligrapher, and visual artist, who teaches Visual Communication at the American University of Armenia, will be guest lecturing.
The first lecture on Tuesday April 6, 2-3:20pm PT will examine the preconditions necessary for the development of calligraphy as cultural expression, looking at the relationship between sign, script, and the art of writing. The second, on Thursday, April 8, 2-3:20pm PT, will explore the role design and letter culture play in changing mind-sets during cataclysmic events taking place in Armenia during the last few years, including the revolution, pandemic, and war.
