ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Runoff is centered on alternative photographic practices and draws upon the contemporary conditions of western environs, engaging with the degradation that is endemic to post-industrial landscapes. Photographs taken at Californian water locations—including the Salton Sea, Death Valley, Catalina Island, and the California coast—are developed into prints through the integration of materials from these sites and experimental techniques. The sampled materials act as a medium for showcasing the present state of these distinct terrains. Through the use of conceptual photography, the exhibition examines tangible and abstract remnants of the reciprocal exchanges between people and their environment.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Callianne Jones is an interdisciplinary artist whose work is rooted in environmental documentation as it relates to contemporary geospatial dynamics. Using a research-based approach, she investigates the contextualization of ever-changing terrains through photographic means. Through her work, she explores the mutual imprints individuals and the environment leave on one another, creating work that engages with both the material and conceptual traces of these interactions. Jones studied at the University of Minnesota and holds a B.F.A. in Art and a B.S.B. in Marketing. She is currently a fellow at the Center for Ethnographic Media Arts and is supported by the Wrigley Institute for Environment and Sustainability at the University of Southern California.
