DESCRIPTION:(中世王権における仏教的世界観の場所性) in Jap
anese only\n\nSUMMARY\n\nIkuyo Matsumoto (Yokohama City University) explor
es differences between Chinese and Japanese concepts of the sovereign's te
 rritory. \n\nFlyer | RSVP\n\n \n\nDESCRIPTION\n\nAt the Meiji Tenno’s (1
852-1912) enthronement ceremony in 1868\, officials had planned to set a g
lobe in front of the emperor’s throne so he could step on Japan with his
foot. Although this plan was ultimately cancelled due to rain\, it reflec
ts how the Meiji emperor was expected to view himself vis-à-vis the world
.\n\nIn this presentation\, Matsumoto will consider the difference between
Chinese and Japanese concepts of the sovereign’s territory. She will al
so consider the meaning of “place” within Buddhist worldviews since pr
emodern Japanese enthronement ceremonies drew on Buddhist logic.\n\nLunch
will be provided.\n\nBio\nIkuyo Matsumoto is Associate Professor at Yokoha
ma City University. She teaches courses on the cultural history of medieva
l Japan. Prof. Matsumoto has published many books and articles\, including
Chūsei ōken to sokui kanjō (Shinwasha\, 2005)\; Girei no chikara\, co-e
dited with Lucia Dolce (Hōzōkan\, 2010)\; and Fūzoku kaiga no bungaku\,
3 vols.\, co-edited with Idemitsu Sachiko and Princess Akiko of Mikasa (S
 hibunkaku Shuppan\, 2009\, 2012\, 2014).
