Running Out: In Search of Water on the High Plains.
Speaker: Lucas Bessire
Associate Professor of Anthropology
University of Oklahoma
Anthropologist Lucas Bessire will discuss his journey back to western Kansas, where five generations of his family lived as irrigation farmers and ranchers, to make sense of this vital resource and its loss. He will discuss the innovative visual research methods he used in his ethnographic research on environmental change as well as the unexpected discoveries he made about what it means to inherit the troubled legacies of the past and how we can take responsibility for a more inclusive, sustainable future.
Bessire's book, Running Out: In Search of Water on the High Plains, has been nominated for the 2021 National Book Award for Non-Fiction.
