h-nguyen/\n\n \n\nABOUT THE EXHIBITION\n\nIt is undeniable that the human r
elationship to the web has been a controversial topic among U.S. public sph
eres\, with most discourse regarding this topic taking place digitally. But
what transpires when internet discourse is translated into tangible object
s whose material associations oppose that of the digital sphere? In her the
sis show titled I’m Scared\, Angela Anh Nguyen confronts this question by m
aterializing the immaterial. This is performed through the conflation of tw
o gestures: (1) The physical act of “tufting” (a form of rug-making) and (2
) the digital act of the “scroll”. As a result\, her body of work presents
a single psychological response through two contrasting modes of interactio
 n. Fundamentally\, in I’m Scared\, there exists a confrontation\, causing t
he spectator to question one’s relationship to the digital sphere by way of
the “rug”.\n\n \n\nABOUT THE ARTIST\n\nAngela Anh Nguyen (b.1995\, Los Ang
eles) is an American textile artist whose work explores the complex relatio
nship between online culture and the material world. Tufting collages that
incorporate diverse media artifacts\, she produces images that are simultan
eously anachronistic and contemporary. Always tinged with a sense of humor\
, they encourage viewers to reflect on the absurdity of the present. Bringi
ng together the digital and industrial\, the personal and the political\, N
guyen’s work presents a multifaceted meditation on modern life.
