 l-Din Attar\, author of The Conference of the Birds\, and Abu al-Qasim al-
 Qushayri\, the author the Risala\, are the two greatest Sufis to have purs
 ued their careers in the great Iranian city of Nishapur. But the city went
  through a transformation between the time of al-Qushayri in the eleventh 
 century and that of Attar in the twelfth. Did the change in their urban su
 rroundings affect their Sufi message? If so\, how?
