USC Dornsife MDES Iranian Studies Initiative will host Professor Richard Bulliet (Columbia University) as part of our USC Dornsife-Farhang Foundation annual distinguished lecture series. Professor Bulliet will be on the USC campus February 21-22, 2018.
Professor Bulliet will deliver a public lecture on Wednesday, February 21st at 4 pm-6 pm entitled "Nishapur: A Tale of Two Sufis" in DML 240.
Lecture description: Farid al-Din Attar, author of The Conference of the Birds, and Abu al-Qasim al-Qushayri, the author the Risala, are the two greatest Sufis to have pursued their careers in the great Iranian city of Nishapur. But the city went through a transformation between the time of al-Qushayri in the eleventh century and that of Attar in the twelfth. Did the change in their urban surroundings affect their Sufi message? If so, how?
