Harvard’s legendary author, appellate advocate and University Professor of constitutional law – whose students and research assistants have included President Barack Obama, Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice Elena Kagan, Chief Judge Merrick Garland and Congressman Adam Schiff – reflects on his Jewish roots; his good fortune in migrating with his refugee family from Shanghai to San Francisco in 1947; and his struggles to defend core principles of justice and human rights both in helping other nations (including the Czech Republic and South Africa) frame their 20th-century constitutions and in enforcing the U.S. Constitution against violations by states and the federal government.
