DESCRIPTION:Book Talk with author MICHAEL LEJA\, James and Nan Wagner Farqu
har Professor Emeritus of History of Art\, University of Pennsylvania.\n\n
\n\nWhen and how did pictures start to permeate everyday lives in the Uni
ted States? What happened to those daily lives when they did? And what hap
pened to pictures in the process? In this full-color\, heavily illustrated
book\, Michael Leja traces the beginnings of a transformation in cultural
life in the United States: when the widespread circulation of pictures re
shaped a culture accustomed to printed and spoken words.\n\n \n\nIn the th
ree decades before the Civil War\, the ordinary experiences of a large seg
ment of the population came to include pictures of many kinds\, including
illustrations in books\, pamphlets\, and newspapers\; photographs on cards
\; full-sheet printed pictures collected in scrapbooks or albums or hung o
n walls\; posters and broadsheets\; spectacular paintings displayed in the
atrical venues\; and more. Pictures supplemented verbal texts—and in som
e cases overshadowed them—for conveying news and information\; portrayin
 g people\, places\, and events\; focusing public discourse\; selling thing
s\; educating and instructing\; generating excitement and aesthetic gratif
ication\; promoting and disguising political agendas\; shaping social iden
tities\; and building and undermining social bonds.\n\n \n\nA Flood of Pic
tures recovers a time before successful pictorial formulas for mass appeal
were established\, before an audience habituated to consumption of pictur
es existed\, and before pictures had become thoroughly commodified. Throug
h its exploration of these nineteenth-century developments\, the book reve
als the foundations of our picture-saturated twenty-first century. \n\n \n
\nHosted by the Visual Studies Research Institute. Co-sponsored by the USC
Department of Art History.\n\nRSVP to vsri@usc.edu.
