It was not easy for the more than 52,000 Holocaust survivors and witnesses in our Visual History Archive to tell their stories. But they did it, because they understood the importance of preserving these painful memories for future generations.

We are those future generations, and it is our turn to carry their stories and their messages of strength and resilience forward.

We are partnering with Zikaron BaSalon (translates to "Memory in the Living Room"), an Israel-based program with a simple, grassroots approach: Zikaron BaSalon provides people with a kit to host a gathering, in person or virtual, centered around survivor stories to commemorate Yom HaShoah or Holocaust Remembrance Day. These gatherings are referred to as “salons.” Over the last 10 years, Zikaron BaSalon has reached more than 1.5 million participants.

Until now, most salons have been led by Survivors, or their descendants, telling their stories. Our new partnership, “Bringing Testimony Home,” introduces a hosting kit (available in English, Spanish, and Hebrew), which includes:

  • A testimony edited into a 30- to 45-minute narrative

  • Educational material for context

  • Prompts for discussion

For Zikaron BaSalon, the partnership means that salon hosts will be empowered to carry on the responsibility of remembering well beyond the years when survivors can speak in person. For us, this collaboration represents an entirely new way of bringing testimony into people’s lives.
