The Workshop will focus on the journal Meigetsuki of Fujiwara no Teika (1162-1241), a famous poet of the Kamakura period. Teika’s mastery of waka continued to influence literature for centuries after his death, and his knowledge of poetry brought him great influence during his life. Teika worked to improve his family’s political fortunes at court, cultivating a relationship with Go Toba and competing fiercely with rivals for both royal and shogunal esteem. His journal gives us a valuable look at elite medieval life. Selections from the journal will focus on education, women, and dynamics at court in the age of dual aristocratic and warrior rule.

The primary language of the Workshop will be English. Applicants must be fluent in Japanese, however, and they must have completed basic coursework in classical Japanese and have experience with reading Kambun.

Sessions will be held on Zoom, Tuesday through Friday, 3:00-5:00 PDT.

Instructors: Dr. Sachiko Kawai and Dr. Emily Warren

Through the workshopping process, participants will learn about the core dictionaries and reference texts for the field as well as effective annotation and collaboration strategies. The workshop will produce English translations and kundoku readings. Participants will also create a communal glossary of translated terms.

Outside of Workshop hours, participants are expected to translate their entries, write annotations and glossary entries, and then revise their presented work. After editing their translations and annotations, the work will be published online through the USC Project for Premodern Japan Studies.

Paul R. Williams: An Architect Considered debuts recently acquired archival drawings, photographs, and plans and pairs them with newly commissioned works by leading contemporary artists, architects, and filmmakers, reframing Paul R Williams’s long under-recognized work and addressing urgent conversations about race, equity, and the future of American cities.

A pivotal figure in 20th-century architecture and civil rights advocacy who studied architectural engineering at USC, Williams was the first Black architect licensed west of the Mississippi. He was also the first known Black member of the American Institute of Architects nationwide (1923), its first Black Fellow (1957), and the first and only Black architect to receive its highest honor, the Gold Medal (posthumously, 2017). Over a career spanning nearly six decades, he is estimated to have designed approximately 3,000 structures, making him one of the most prolific and influential architects of his time.

Highlighting 31 housing projects from his long career, Paul R. Williams: An Architect Considered spotlights Williams’ innovative solutions for collective living, primarily in Los Angeles, during the second Great Migration, a period of rapid urbanization. More than 60 items from the Paul R. Williams Archive, which was jointly acquired in 2020 by the USC School of Architecture and the Getty Research Institute, will be shown in conversation with major new commissions by Edgar Arceneaux; Current Interests (Matthew Au and Mira Henry); enFOLD Collective (Dana McKinney White and Megan Echols); Darell W. Fields; David Hartt; Cory Henry; and Amanda Williams, as well as a selection of existing works by photographers Julius Shulman and Janna Ireland.

Paul R. Williams: An Architect Considered debuts recently acquired archival drawings, photographs, and plans and pairs them with newly commissioned works by leading contemporary artists, architects, and filmmakers, reframing Paul R Williams’s long under-recognized work and addressing urgent conversations about race, equity, and the future of American cities.

A pivotal figure in 20th-century architecture and civil rights advocacy who studied architectural engineering at USC, Williams was the first Black architect licensed west of the Mississippi. He was also the first known Black member of the American Institute of Architects nationwide (1923), its first Black Fellow (1957), and the first and only Black architect to receive its highest honor, the Gold Medal (posthumously, 2017). Over a career spanning nearly six decades, he is estimated to have designed approximately 3,000 structures, making him one of the most prolific and influential architects of his time.

Highlighting 31 housing projects from his long career, Paul R. Williams: An Architect Considered spotlights Williams’ innovative solutions for collective living, primarily in Los Angeles, during the second Great Migration, a period of rapid urbanization. More than 60 items from the Paul R. Williams Archive, which was jointly acquired in 2020 by the USC School of Architecture and the Getty Research Institute, will be shown in conversation with major new commissions by Edgar Arceneaux; Current Interests (Matthew Au and Mira Henry); enFOLD Collective (Dana McKinney White and Megan Echols); Darell W. Fields; David Hartt; Cory Henry; and Amanda Williams, as well as a selection of existing works by photographers Julius Shulman and Janna Ireland.

Heal your heART

USC students are invited to join Visions and Voices for a visit to the Hospital of Emotions, a large-scale immersive pop-up exhibition in Los Angeles, where art, architecture, and human emotion come together inside a real hospital building.

For a limited time, a former hospital is transformed into a living museum of emotions. 70 artists have taken over 80+ hospital rooms, creating site-specific immersive environments. Each room explores a different human emotion—joy, love, fear, anger, hope, sadness, gratitude, resilience, and more—allowing visitors to discover unexpected emotional worlds.

The tour will include the opportunity to hear from and speak with two designers from the Scene Shift Collective who created one of the rooms in the Hospital of Emotions: Maureen Weiss, professor of scenic design at LACC Theatre Academy, and Sibyl Wickersheimer, professor of scenic design at USC School of Dramatic Arts. Their most recent project for the Hospital of Emotions was inspired by the theme of compassion. Over the course of two weeks, a team of puppet makers, prop, scenic, and costume designers collaborated to craft an installation that blends theatrical storytelling with visual artistry.

BIOS:
Maureen Weiss is a Los Angeles–based performance designer whose work spans theatre, immersive experiences, and exhibition design. Her designs have been seen at The Getty Villa, the Latino Theater Company, International City Theatre, and 18th Street Arts Center, among others. She is the co-author of Scene Shift: U.S. Set Designers in Conversation. Maureen teaches scenic design at Los Angeles City College and is committed to creating evocative visual worlds that foster collaboration, storytelling, and audience connection.

Sibyl Wickersheimer is a Los Angeles-based set designer. Her interests span design for live performance, installations, and museum exhibitions to design for mental health care initiatives. Her foundation as a theatrical set designer led Sibyl to co-author the book Scene Shift: U.S. Set Designers in Conversation with scenographer Maureen Weiss.

Moveable Feast brings together arts partners and creative voices in conversation to shape collective experiences and deepen our understanding of the world and ourselves through the arts and humanities. The latest installment of the series features renowned visual and performance artist Gronk in conversation with Paul Holdengräber. 

Gronk is the heir to Paul Klee: "A line," wrote Klee, "is a dot that went for a walk." Gronk maintains a fierce commitment to the dynamic nature of the line, to color, to repeated patterns and shapes like musical notations and graffiti. The importance of the gestural, of the hand, the love of Japanese calligraphy, of fluidity, is visible in Gronk's extraordinarily varied body of work. 

In a far-ranging conversation, Holdengräber and Gronk will dive into the artist’s younger years in the avant-garde multimedia arts collective known as Asco (Spanish meaning nausea, disgust); together they will examine his numerous collaborations with stage designers, directors, and musicians. The conversation will reveal how deeply Gronk has made his own the words of the Polish avant-garde playwright, painter, philosopher, and novelist Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz from his 1920 absurdist play, They: "I don't even want to be an artist, which I longed to be throughout all of my miserable life. I want to be myself. That's all." 

The Moveable Feast program is presented in partnership with USC Museums and Caltech, as well as the support of Selma Holo and Mei-Lee Ney.

Gronk is a nationally celebrated painter and performance artist from Los Angeles. He was a founding member of Asco, the famed avant-garde multimedia arts collective.

Gronk’s work spans many mediums, including drawing, painting, and performance art in collaboration with musicians and performers, as well as stage design. He is best known for his physical approach to painting.

Paul Holdengräber is an acclaimed interviewer and cultural interlocutor. He was the founding executive director of Onassis Los Angeles (OLA) and founder and director of The New York Public Library’s LIVE from the NYPL cultural series, in which he interviewed and hosted more than 600 events featuring the likes of Patti Smith, Wes Anderson, Mike Tyson, Werner Herzog and many more.

As a nation often framed through assertions of superficial contradiction, highly technical yet steeped in historical reverence, Japan offers an ideal site for examining how challenges to the prevailing market-based order are stifled. By offering increasingly elaborate and improbable techno-utopian depictions of the Tokyo, Japan, and the world to come, official entities thwart sustained efforts at even limited forms of social transformation. Ultimately, Fraught Futures argues that officially promulgated visions of the future should be approached critically, as deceptive efforts to undermine attempts to actualize a collective future freed from the oppressive strictures of market-driven isolation and authoritarian austerity.

Author biography:
Paul Christensen is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in the United States. His current work examines the struggles of unhoused individuals and people confronting designations of addiction, particularly in Tokyo. This research forms part of a broader theoretical and ethnographic orientation, grounded in Japan, that seeks to illuminate how the absurdities of austerity-driven capitalism, and its numerous harmful manifestations, shape daily life. The result of this work is his second book, Fraught Futures: Hope, Connection, and the Unhoused across Tokyo, under contract with Cornell University Press and scheduled for publication in March 2027.

Make a parade in a day with Los Angeles–based artist collective Freak Nature Puppets! Build mini-floats, giant puppets, silly noisemakers, doodads, and anything else you can create, followed by a joyful parade across the USC campus.

What to Expect:
Drop in between 12 noon and 4:30 p.m. to build or come at 5 p.m. to join the parade—you can participate for as little or as long as you’d like. Participants will learn making skills from Freak Nature and experience the power of collective creation and the joy of public performance. No experience needed, and all materials will be provided (though you’re welcome to bring your own, too).

Experience an engaging staged reading of Oliver Mayer’s new adaptation of The Visions of Simone Machard, a classic play co-written by Lion Feuchtwanger and Bertolt Brecht in 1942 exploring themes of oppression and resistance.

More about The Visions of Simone Machard:
The original play featured a teenage girl working at a gas station and oil field during the German invasion of France in 1940. In dream sequences, she identifies with Joan of Arc and sees herself leading the Resistance. Mayer’s adaptation is set in a dystopian Los Angeles shaped by oil production and constant surveillance. Performed by USC School of Dramatic Arts students and faculty with design and staging by Evidence Room founding artistic director Bart DeLorenzo, this thought-provoking presentation evokes both our powerlessness in the midst of political upheaval and the urge to resist against all odds.

Post-Performance Conversation:
Following the reading, Oliver Mayer, Bart DeLorenzo, USC Dornsife professors Manuel Pastor and Béatrice Mousli, and student performers will discuss the creative process behind the adaptation and themes of resistance, community, and social change.

Bios:
Oliver Mayer is a playwright, poet, librettist, and professor of dramatic writing at the USC School of Dramatic Arts. The author of more than 30 plays, his works include Blade to the Heat, Members Only, Ghost Waltz, The Dragon Tree, and Yerma in the Desert. He has also written libretti for several operas and musicals, including 3 Paderewskis, which premiered at the Kennedy Center. A regular contributor to Zócalo Public Square, Mayer is also the author of the poetry collection Body Languages. His work has received numerous honors, including The American Prize for new opera.

Bart DeLorenzo is the founding artistic director of Evidence Room theater, where he has directed numerous local and world premieres. Recent productions include The False Servant, Passion Play, Annapurna, Ivanov, Margo Veil, and The Receptionist. He is a graduate of Yale University and the American Repertory Theater’s Institute for Advanced Theater Training at Harvard and a faculty member at CalArts. DeLorenzo’s work has earned widespread recognition, including four Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards, six LA Weekly Awards, three Backstage Garland Awards, and the Alan Schneider Director Award.

Manuel Pastor is a Distinguished Professor of Sociology and American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California. He currently directs the Equity Research Institute at USC. He holds an economics Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and is the inaugural holder of the Turpanjian Chair in Civil Society and Social Change at USC. Pastor’s research has generally focused on issues of the economic, environmental, and social conditions facing low-income urban communities—and the social movements seeking to change those realities.

Béatrice Mousli received her doctorate from the University of Paris-IV Sorbonne in 1993 and is currently a professor in French at USC Dornsife. Her work has three main focuses: French and Francophone 20th and 21st century literatures, French colonial history, and literary institutions and networks in France and in the United States and transatlantic literary exchanges.

About the Book: Horizons of Catastrophe in the American West contributes to discussions in the environmental humanities and western U.S. studies about how we read past cultural history in the light of our determined yet unknown future under climate catastrophe. Examining an eclectic but interrelated and interdisciplinary range of photographs, films, and novels of the West; Western historiography; geological science; Tony Kushner’s Angels in America; the Los Angeles freeway system and the city’s layered temporalities; and the long poem form among contemporary Indigenous poets, William R. Handley argues that artists within mostly twentieth-century settler cultures saw on past horizons of the West premonitions of catastrophe—without, of course, knowing what their civilization was doing to the atmosphere and what that portended for the planet’s future. The possibilities and limits of their artistic forms, Handley shows us, offer a way for us to find hope in the wreckage of the past and to forge a future grounded in environmental realism.

About the Author: William R. Handley is Associate Professor of English at the University of Southern California. He is the author of Marriage, Violence, and Nation in the American Literary West, coeditor of True West: Authenticity and the American West (Bison Books, 2007), and editor of The Brokeback Book: From Story to Cultural Phenomenon (Bison Books, 2011).

People have fewer friends, join fewer clubs and volunteer less compared to previous generations. Growing isolation contributes to political polarization and social distrust, weakening democracies worldwide.

On September 23, political scientist Robert Putnam joins former United Kingdom Prime Minister Gordon Brown, chair of the Center for Civic Society at the USC Schaeffer Institute, for a conversation about how to rebuild the social and community bonds that support healthy democracies. More than 25 years after his influential book Bowling Alone captured the stark consequences of America’s fraying social fabric, Putnam will draw on research from his most recent book, The Upswing, to explore how communities and civic institutions can overcome deep societal divisions to foster connection. Brown will share insights from his decades of global leadership to connect the research to policy and practice.

About the exhibit:

Paul R. Williams: An Architect Considered debuts recently acquired archival drawings, photographs, and plans and pairs them with newly commissioned works by leading contemporary artists, architects, and filmmakers, reframing Paul R Williams’s long under-recognized work and addressing urgent conversations about race, equity, and the future of American cities.

A pivotal figure in 20th-century architecture and civil rights advocacy who studied architectural engineering at USC, Williams was the first Black architect licensed west of the Mississippi. He was also the first known Black member of the American Institute of Architects nationwide (1923), its first Black Fellow (1957), and the first and only Black architect to receive its highest honor, the Gold Medal (posthumously, 2017). Over a career spanning nearly six decades, he is estimated to have designed approximately 3,000 structures, making him one of the most prolific and influential architects of his time.

Highlighting 31 housing projects from his long career, Paul R. Williams: An Architect Considered spotlights Williams’ innovative solutions for collective living, primarily in Los Angeles, during the second Great Migration, a period of rapid urbanization. More than 60 items from the Paul R. Williams Archive, which was jointly acquired in 2020 by the USC School of Architecture and the Getty Research Institute, will be shown in conversation with major new commissions, as well as a selection of existing works by photographers Julius Shulman and Janna Ireland.

Weaving in pre-Hispanic music and poetry, this timeless story brings Aztec mythology to life in a rich historical tapestry that resonates across cultures, pitting love and defiance against tyranny.

About the Book: Between the late 1940s and the end of the twentieth century, natural gas became Iran's bedrock energy source. Billed as a futuristic fuel for a future world power, gas became an avenue for the country's developmentalist ambitions. The ability to build technologically sophisticated infrastructures served as a powerful tool of state legitimation, both before and after the 1979 Revolution, and tied top-down politics of modernization to bottom-up feelings of national belonging.

Accelerant analyzes the interwoven histories of energy, development, and the environment in Iran. Following the movement of natural gas from underground deposits, through infrastructures of refining and distribution, and into everyday life, Ciruce Movahedi-Lankarani explores the roles of development planners, oil firms, industrialists, engineers, and consumers—as well as the mountain ranges, sedimentary rock, and natural gas itself—to show how natural gas emerged as a crucial enabler of industrialization and a strong impetus for resource nationalism. Tracing the transformation of gas from a waste product into a vital resource, this book offers a history of anticolonial developmentalism in Iran—revealing a key driver toward intensified energy use that suggests why and how societies in the Global South became voracious consumers of fossil fuel energy.

About the Author: Ciruce Movahedi-Lankarani is the Farhang Foundation Early Career Chair in Iranian Studies and Assistant Professor of Middle East Studies and Environmental Studies at the University of Southern California.

Freak Nature Puppets is a Los Angeles–based artist collective creating dreamlike worlds through giant puppetry, physical theater, music, and participatory performance. Inspired by the radical puppetry of Bread and Puppet Theater, the visual imagination of Mummenschanz, and the joyful absurdity of Pee-wee Herman, Freak Nature crafts immersive experiences that invite audiences into playful acts of creativity and wonder. Their collaborators have included Dead & Company, Childish Gambino, Bob Baker Marionette Theater, and Poncili Creación, and they developed the collective as the inaugural artists-in-residence at Los Angeles’ Elysian Theater.

About the Book: We use avatars to play videogames. We use pseudonyms on social media. We use VPNs to mask our identities and activities. In the digital realm, anonymity is everywhere, a persistent option for those who wish to hide, experiment, and deceive. But we are anonymous in more contexts than the digital. In urban settings, we routinely experience the anonymity of the crowd, and routinely use anonymity to participate in political life and social protests. Anonymity matters. This book is a wager that we can learn much about society, humanity, and power by analyzing the structural tensions and possibilities of anonymity, and by analyzing how the economy of anonymity is changing in a modernity defined by computation.

While many have explored the connections between surveillance, datafication, and privacy, relatively little has been done to theorize anonymity and its critical role in our lives. This book rebalances our intellectual investments by expanding our understandings of anonymity. Putting the work of Gloria Anzaldúa and Bernhard Siegert into conversation, Hector Amaya examines the contours of anonymity in different social domains—in relationship to individuals, institutions, and contexts; to epistemology and ontology; and to history and society. As the book shows, anonymity entails paradoxical possibilities—sometimes anonymity is experienced as freedom and other times as powerlessness, or subjugation.

About the Author: Hector Amaya is Professor of Communication at USC Annenberg and the author most recently of Trafficking: Narcoculture in Mexico and the United States (2020), among other titles.

EASC Guest Speaker Series: Talk by Prof. Meimei Zhang (Associate Professor of Asian Studies, Occidental College) with Faculty Moderator Wanmeng Li (EALC 110: East Asian Humanities: The Great Tradition)

Over the past decade, the emerging field of critical plant studies has challenged anthropocentric approaches to the humanities by asking how plants participate in shaping human perception, culture, and environments. Rather than treating plants merely as symbols or passive objects of representation, scholars have increasingly explored their materiality, agency, and ecological relationships with humans. This talk offers a brief overview of major theoretical approaches in plant humanities before turning to a case study of bajiao (Chinese banana) in premodern Chinese literature and visual culture, and how bajiao became an active participant in the formation of religious thought, sensory perception, regional imagination, literary expression, and garden aesthetics in premodern China.

Peng Xu’s The Courtesan’s Memory, Voice, and Late Ming Drama (University of Michigan Press, 2025) reinterprets late Ming drama by foregrounding courtesan performance culture as a generative force in theatrical production. Drawing on a wide range of sources—including scripts, city guides, biographies, diaries, letters, and visual materials—the book argues that courtesans were not merely subjects of representation but active agents who reshaped theatrical form, performance conditions, and literary style. In doing so, it challenges male-centered historiography and offers a new framework for understanding gender, media, and creativity in early modern Chinese theater.

ABSTRACT: In the wake of World War II, leaders in the U.S. defense bureaucracy routinely looked to private industry for assistance in running the emerging national security state. Over the decades that followed, officers were sent to study at business schools, clerical workers were subjected to time and motion studies, and base commanders struggled with accounting as they were instructed for the first time to keep track of resources and labor in terms of dollars. While the Vietnam War led many military leaders to denounce “managerialism” in favor of traditional concepts of command and leadership, by that time the language and values of business management had become thoroughly embedded in the institutional structure of the military. In Pentagon Capitalism, A.J. Murphy shows how the remaking of the defense bureaucracy in the image of the profit-seeking firm changed the experience of work in the military, redefined what it meant to be an officer, and facilitated the privatization of many of the defense establishment’s functions.

BIO: A.J. Murphy is an assistant professor of History at Brandeis University, where they teach courses on military history, the history of capitalism, and the history of gender and sexuality. They are the author of Pentagon Capitalism: How the Cold War US Military Modeled Itself on Private Business (Harvard University Press, 2026).

Performance artist Raegan Truax will perform in the same place, a 46-hour durational performance that draws inspiration from the queer heritages held both at ONE Archives and within Truax’s own body as a living archive. The work showcases Truax’s queer feminist methodologies of staying with, listening through, and laboring beside traces that refuse to settle.

In a political moment haunted by violence against queer and trans life, Truax asks what it means to stand where others once stood—to breathe in proximity to their desire, fear, labor, refusal, and survival. Have we arrived “in the same place,” or does queer time fold strangely around us, collapsing there into now, the future into something already remembered in the body?

How to Experience in the same place:
Because the performance unfolds continuously over an entire weekend, no two visits will be the same. Visitors are welcome throughout the performance, which begins Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. and concludes with a brunch on Sunday morning at 11 a.m.

This Is One Part of a Series!
in the same place is a part of a month-long residency with durational performance artist Raegan Truax at ONE Archives that explores themes of power, connection, exhaustion, and embodiment. Raegan Truax is a durational performance artist, scholar, and educator whose work explores time, embodiment, and queer feminist performance practices. They hold a PhD in Theater and Performance Studies from Stanford University and MA degrees in Performance Studies and Gender Politics from New York University. Truax is the founder of ON DURATION and executive director of Creative Body Institute. Taiwanese dance company HUNG DANCE will make their L.A. debut with BIRDY, a captivating dance work by choreographer and artistic director LAI Hung-chung that explores the interplay of freedom and limitations within Taiwan's communities. Set to an eclectic mix of electronic and Chinese classical music, BIRDY seamlessly blends Tai Chi with contemporary dance. Drawing on imagery of birds, cages, and flight, BIRDY portrays the journey from tradition to modernity and conveys the powerful message that we can challenge limitations while seeking balance, freedom, and identity.

Bios:
HUNG DANCE is a Taiwanese contemporary dance company founded in 2017 by artistic director and choreographer LAI Hung-chung. Named after the Chinese character 翃 (Hung), meaning “to soar,” the company is dedicated to original productions, international collaboration, touring, and supporting emerging choreographers through its Stray Birds Dance Platform. HUNG DANCE has received international recognition and toured extensively across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Africa. Blending traditional and contemporary influences, LAI’s choreography explores human emotion and the relationship between culture and nature, drawing on Chinese opera, mythology, and Tai Chi to create a distinctive movement language.

LAI Hung-chung is a Taiwanese choreographer and founder of HUNG DANCE. Known for blending Tai Chi, Chinese opera traditions, and contemporary movement, his work explores themes of freedom, identity, and human connection. His acclaimed productions have received international awards and toured worldwide, including sold-out performances at Festival OFF Avignon. LAI is also the founder of the Stray Birds Dance Platform, which supports emerging choreographers and international artistic exchange.

Nate Sloan is the co-host of the acclaimed podcast Switched on Pop, which explores the music, theory, and cultural impact behind today’s biggest songs. A musicologist and professor at the USC Thornton School of Music, Sloan specializes in popular music, music history, and music theory, helping audiences hear familiar hits in new ways.

EASC Guest Speaker Series: Talk by Prof. Meimei Zhang (Associate Professor of Asian Studies, Occidental College) with Faculty Moderator Wanmeng Li (EALC 110: East Asian Humanities: The Great Tradition)

Over the past decade, the emerging field of critical plant studies has challenged anthropocentric approaches to the humanities by asking how plants participate in shaping human perception, culture, and environments. Rather than treating plants merely as symbols or passive objects of representation, scholars have increasingly explored their materiality, agency, and ecological relationships with humans. This talk offers a brief overview of major theoretical approaches in plant humanities before turning to a case study of bajiao (Chinese banana) in premodern Chinese literature and visual culture, and how bajiao became an active participant in the formation of religious thought, sensory perception, regional imagination, literary expression, and garden aesthetics in premodern China.

About the Book: In early modern China, a major revival of Buddhism coincided with a surging fascination with theater. Buddhist monastics and laypeople increasingly participated in viewing, discussing, and writing plays. Far from merely serving as a medium for conveying religious teachings and practices, drama became a source of deep concern for Buddhists due to the perceived tension between spiritual discipline and worldly entertainment.

In Performing Enlightenment, Mengxiao Wang examines how Buddhist clerics and laity engaged with and drove innovations in theater during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. Drawing on an extensive range of sources—including clerical sermons, scriptural commentaries, temple gazetteers, morality books, literati prose, and dramatic texts and paratexts—Wang argues that Ming-Qing Buddhists resolved the conflict between religion and entertainment by transforming theater into a creative mode of devotional practice. Consequently, playwriting, stage performance, and theatergoing all emerged as legitimate pathways to spiritual enlightenment. This interdisciplinary work provides fresh insights into Chinese studies, Buddhist studies, and theater studies while offering a comparative perspective on the complex interplay between religion, literature, and performance across cultures.

About the Author: Mengxiao Wang is Assistant Professor of Chinese Literature at the University of Southern California.

The EASC Manuscript Review is a professional development seminar for faculty and graduate students, from USC and the wider community.

Leading scholars in the fields of cultural, intellectual and literary history of Korea will discuss a new book manuscript by Graeme R. Reynolds, Assistant Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures, entitled Material Historiography: The Official Histories of Koryŏ from the Fifteenth to Eighteenth Century. Discussants include Donald L. Baker, Professor Emeritus of Asian Studies at The University of British Columbia and Hwisang Cho, Associate Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Emory College of Arts and Sciences. Faculty and graduate students from USC and the community are welcome to attend.

Step into an immersive world blending projection, spoken word, and dance. Inspired by South Asian Ragamala painting traditions, this three-night series will transform the USC Pacific Asia Museum courtyard into a dynamic landscape of light, sound, sculpture, and movement.

Created by artist Gautam Rangan, Bharatanatyam dancer and choreographer Ramya Harishankar, and environmental scholar Devavani Chatterjea, Living Landscapes explores themes of emotion, nature, migration, and memory and reimagines ancient storytelling and visual traditions as a shared, participatory experience.

Explore Living Landscapes: Ecology of Rasa at your own pace during this self-guided interactive experience. Wander through an evolving landscape of light, sound, and digital art, and engage with the installation in ways that spark reflection, curiosity, and connection.

Bios:
Gautam Rangan is a Los Angeles–based multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of technology, perception, and environmental storytelling. Using projection mapping, interactive systems, and spatial design, he creates immersive installations that examine relationships between body, language, and place. Drawing on backgrounds in engineering, design, and large-scale experiential environments, he has contributed to public, commercial, and cultural projects for global audiences. Since 2020, his independent artistic practice has focused on installation as a medium for perceptual inquiry. Devavani Chatterjea (she/they) is a Bengali American scientist, educator, writer, and policymaker whose work explores the connections between bodies, environments, and health. Their research is shaped by collaborations with artists, poets, filmmakers, and choreographers. In 2025, Chatterjea joined Carleton College as Director of Environmental Studies after serving on the faculty at Macalester College, where they co-founded a leading interdisciplinary program in community and global health. Most recently, they served as Deputy Director for Chemical Safety at the White House Council on Environmental Quality during the Biden-Harris administration, leading efforts to address harmful “forever chemicals."

Ramya Harishankar is the artistic director of Arpana Dance Company and School, one of the premier Bharatanatyam institutions in California. An empaneled artist of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, she has served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, California Arts Council, and World Arts West. For more than five decades, Harishankar has performed internationally across India, Asia, Europe, Australia, and North America while sharing her art with generations of students throughout Southern California. A California Arts Council Legacy Artist, she has received numerous honors recognizing her contributions to the cultural landscape.

USC students will have the opportunity to catch Oh, Mary!, a dark comedy about a miserable, suffocated Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. Unrequited yearning, alcoholism, and suppressed desires abound in this 80-minute play that finally examines the forgotten life and dreams of Mrs. Lincoln through the lens of an idiot (playwright Cole Escola).

Declared "one of the best comedies in years" by The New York Times, Oh, Mary! received two Tony Awards, including Best Direction of a Play (Sam Pinkleton), Drama League Awards for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Direction of a Play, as well as a special citation from the New York Drama Critics’ Circle. It was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

About the Book: The upwardly mobile Kim family employs a young woman to help manage their new house. Mr. Kim begins an affair with the nameless 'housemaid', who soon drags the entire family into a terrible tragedy… The director Kim Ko-young played a formative part in South Korean cinema's “Golden Age” of the 1960s and 1970s; his 1960 masterpiece, Hanyo (The Housemaid), rescued and restored after almost being lost, is today widely regarded as one of the greatest South Korean films of all time. Directors such as Park Chan-wook, Im Sang-soo, Kim Ki-duk, Ryu Seung-wan and Kim Jee-woon have all praised the film, and Bong Joon-ho has referred to Hanyo as “the Citizen Kane of Korean cinema,” citing it as an inspiration for his film, Parasite (2019).

In this book, Youngmin Choe argues that Hanyo encapsulates the mood of social change in postwar South Korea during the period of tremendous upheaval and rapid transformation that followed the devastating war, which divided families across the newly formed Cold War boundaries. The housemaid – a figure that Kim Ki-young would explore repeatedly throughout his career – was a young woman driven by greed and envy, a femme-fatale set loose on the middle-class home. A monstrous embodiment of the destructive desires of capitalism, which recklessly eroded the foundations of tradition, this housemaid served as the conscience of a period that otherwise leaned heavily into economic transformation, pointing to the anxiety that undergirded what might be otherwise regarded as a time of 'progress'. Going beyond the traditionalist approaches that resist feminist readings of Hanyo, Youngmin Choe insists that the enduring legacy of Hanyo is both due to its uncanny aesthetics and - though it certainly was not intended to be an explicitly feminist film - in the questions it raises about class mobility, gender oppression and women's work.

About the Author: Youngmin Choe is Associate Professor of Korean Cinema and Visual Culture at the University of Southern California, USA. Her previous publications include Tourist Distractions: Travelling and Feeling in Transnational Hallyu Cinema (2016) and the co-edited volume The Korean Popular Culture Reader (2014).

Set against the backdrop of Japanese American history, including the impact of incarceration during World War II, the film weaves together personal stories, vibrant celebrations, and historical insights. Featuring appearances by cultural icon George Takei, Kristen Hayashi curator at the Japanese American National Museum, and the story of renowned photographer Toyo Miyatake, The Mochi Movie brings together voices across generations to reflect on the deeper meaning of tradition.

This dark comedy written, produced, and directed by John Waters satirizes the melodrama film genre, the “woman’s film” category, and suburban life of the early 1980s.

DESCRIPTION:
Paul R. Williams (1894–1980) is a pivotal figure in twentieth century architecture and civil rights advocacy. Discover how Williams helped shape the visual identity of Los Angeles and build an institutional presence for the city’s African American community.

Led by USC architecture students, a guided tour of three community spaces designed by Williams will offer insight into the architect’s creative process and feature sites that fostered access and dignity for the African American community.

Tour Stops:
28th Street YMCA (1926)
Including affordable housing, meeting rooms, a gymnasium, and a large swimming pool, the 28th Street YMCA was one of few spaces that provided recreational and educational opportunities for Black men.

Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Building (1949)
When Williams was hired to design its new headquarters in the 1940s, Golden State Mutual was the largest Black-owned insurance company west of the Mississippi and one of the first to offer insurance to African Americans in Los Angeles.

The First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles (1968)
An active member of the First AME community, Williams was commissioned to design its new sanctuary in the 1960s, creating one of the city’s most influential and respected spaces in the Black community.

Following the tour, attendees will return to the USC Fisher Museum of Art to visit Paul R. Williams: An Architect Considered, a major exhibition that pairs Williams’s original architectural drawings with newly commissioned works by contemporary artists and architects.

About the exhibition Paul R. Williams: An Architect Considered:
Paul R. Williams: An Architect Considered explores the life, work, and enduring influence of one of America's most important architects. Presented by the USC School of Architecture and USC Fisher Museum of Art, the exhibition brings together original drawings, archival materials, and newly commissioned works by contemporary artists and architects to examine Williams's contributions to housing, community building, and modern design. By highlighting both his celebrated landmarks and his innovative work in affordable multifamily housing, the exhibition invites visitors to reconsider Williams's legacy and its relevance to conversations about equity, access, and the future of the built environment.

About Paul R. Williams:
A pivotal figure in 20th-century architecture and civil rights advocacy who studied architectural engineering at USC, Williams was the first Black architect licensed west of the Mississippi. He was also the first known Black member of the American Institute of Architects nationwide (1923), its first Black Fellow (1957), and the first and only Black architect to receive its highest honor, the Gold Medal (posthumously, 2017). Over a career spanning nearly six decades, he is estimated to have designed more than 3,000 structures, making him one of the most prolific and influential architects of his time.

Bios:
Erica L. Rosenthal is Director of Research at the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center and the Media Impact Project. A social psychologist with more than 20 years of experience, she studies how media narratives influence audiences’ knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. Her research has explored topics including health equity, immigration, reproductive rights, and gender-based violence. Rosenthal holds a PhD from Claremont Graduate University and regularly speaks and writes about the social impact of storytelling and media.

Stuart P. Swadron, MD, FACEP, is Adjunct Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medical Education at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and Editor-in-Chief of CorePendium, an online reference for emergency and acute care medicine. After beginning his career as a general practitioner in underserved communities in British Columbia, he completed specialty training in emergency medicine and joined USC, where he served in leadership roles including residency program director, vice chair for education, and assistant dean.

Adam Scott Weissman is a writer, producer, educator, and USC alumnus whose credits include The Good Doctor, where he spent five seasons and finished as co-producer, and episodes of CSI: NY and Proven Innocent. He has also developed television pilots and award-winning stage work. Weissman teaches in USC’s John Wells Division of Writing for Screen & Television and has led creative writing programs for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated writers throughout Los Angeles.

Kate Folb is Director and Principal Investigator of Hollywood, Health & Society at the USC Annenberg Norman Lear Center. For more than 20 years, she has worked at the intersection of entertainment and public health, collaborating with television and film creators on issues including substance use, reproductive health, and adolescent well-being. Prior to joining USC, she led entertainment education initiatives for organizations including the Kaiser Family Foundation, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Folb holds degrees from the University of Denver and UCLA.

DESCRIPTION:
A celebrated actress with over 40 film and television credits, Bae Doona is a globally recognized and renowned figure of the South Korean mediascape. Paying homage to her three-decade career, Walking in Between: A Bae Doona Retrospective begins with a roundtable discussion on Korean cinema through the lens of Bae’s filmography followed by a screening of Cloud Atlas (2012), Bae’s first foray in Hollywood.

The panel will feature Joseph Jonghyun Jeon, Ungsan Kim, and Nam Lee, leading scholars of Korean cinema, who will discuss Bae’s partnerships with global directors and how her work has helped shape conversation about Korean cinema’s global reach.

Following the conversation, experience the epic, genre-defying film Cloud Atlas, the Wachowski sisters’ ambitious adaptation that spans centuries and continents. The film weaves together six separate stories written in different styles and timelines. Bios:
Joseph Jonghyun Jeon is Director of the Center for Critical Korean Studies and Professor of English at the University of California, Irvine, with appointments in Asian American Studies, Film and Media Studies, and Culture and Theory. He is the author of Racial Things, Racial Forms: Objecthood in Avant-Garde Asian American Poetry (Iowa, 2012); Vicious Circuits: Korea’s IMF Cinema and the End of the American Century (Stanford, 2019); and Bong Joon Ho: Global Entanglements (Illinois, 2024).

Ungsan Kim is Assistant Professor of Asian cinema in the Department of Asian Languages and Literature at the University of Washington. He teaches and researches Korean cinema, inter-Asian cinema, queer cinema, and Asian genre films. He is currently completing his monograph as a Cornell Society for the Humanities fellow.

Nam Lee is Associate Professor of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University. A former film critic and journalist in South Korea, her research focuses on contemporary Korean cinema, global film authorship, women’s filmmaking, and gender representation. She is the author of Rediscovering Korean Cinema (University of Michigan Press, 2019), The Films of Bong Joon Ho (Rutgers University Press, 2020), and East Asian Remake (Edinburgh University Press, 2023), and has contributed to several edited volumes on Korean and East Asian cinema. Her current work examines cinematic portrayals of motherhood and aging femininity.

Directed by Palme d’Or winner Kore-eda Hirokazu, Air Doll stars Bae Doona as Nozomi, an inflatable sex doll who mysteriously comes to life and learns to navigate modern Tokyo. Through Bae Doona’s manic yet subdued performance, the film transforms an unconventional premise into a moving reflection on longing, connection, and what it means to be human.

Bios:
Bae Doona is an internationally acclaimed South Korean actress whose career spans film, television, and global streaming platforms. She gained early recognition in Bong Joon-ho’s Barking Dogs Never Bite and The Host, as well as Park Chan-wook’s Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, before earning international acclaim for her leading role in Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Air Doll. She later achieved global recognition through the Wachowski sisters’ Cloud Atlas and Netflix’s Sense8. Bae is celebrated for her versatility and emotionally nuanced performances across genres and cultures.

Born in Tokyo in 1962, Hirokazu Kore-eda graduated from Waseda University and joined TV Man Union, where he primarily directed documentary television programs. He made his feature film directorial debut with Maborosi in 1995. His film Shoplifters (2018) won the Palme d’Or at the 71st Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards. His 2023 film Monster received both the Best Screenplay Award and the Queer Palm at the 76th Cannes Film Festival. In 2026, Sheep in the Box was released in Japan, with its North American release to follow. His live-action adaptation of Look Back is also forthcoming.

Akira Lippit is a film scholar, writer, and editor whose books include Ex-Cinema, Atomic Light (Shadow Optics), Electric Animal, and Cinema without Reflection. His current research focuses on contemporary Japanese cinema and the work of David Lynch. A recipient of awards from the Academy of Korean Studies, Japan Foundation, and Fulbright-Hays, Lippit is active as a programmer, interviewer, and editor, and serves on the editorial boards of Discourse and Film Quarterly.

Produced at the beginning of the careers of both Jeong Jae-eun and Bae Doona, Take Care of My Cat is set in Incheon at the turn of the millennium. Jeong’s acclaimed debut follows five young women navigating friendship, work, and uncertain futures after high school. Bae Doona stars as Tae-hie, a front desk worker at her family’s sauna who dreams of traveling the world on a rowboat while holding together the group’s tapering friendship.

Her later work, including Talking Architect (2011), City: Hall (2013), and Ecology in Concrete (2017), examines architecture, public space, democracy, and environmental sustainability through documentary and experimental forms.

Youngmin Choe is an Associate Professor of Korean Cinema and Visual Culture and Chair of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at USC. Her publications include Hanyo (The Housemaid) (BFI, 2025), Tourist Distractions: Traveling and Feeling in Transnational Hallyu Cinema, and The Korean Popular Culture Reader (co-editor). Her research has appeared in leading film and media journals, including Cinema Journal and the Journal of Japanese and Korean Cinema.

About
In the fall of 1943, despite fighting some of the Pacific's bloodiest battles, the United States and Japan pulled off a diplomatic coup—the exchange of civilians caught on the wrong side of the battlefield after Pearl Harbor. Nearly fifteen hundred Allied civilians trapped in Asia, mostly Americans, sailed through dangerous waters to an Indian port city where they were traded for an equivalent number of Japanese immigrants and their families sent from the Americas.

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Evelyn Iritani has spent over ten years researching and interviewing family members and survivors of the exchange. On the ships were Emily Hahn, the sharp-tongued New Yorker writer and her illegitimate daughter by lover Charles Boxer, now imprisoned as a British spy; Don Hasuike, a Japanese American teenager who loved baseball and the Green Hornet radio show, being shipped to a country he'd never seen; and Daniel Brooke McKinnon, an American missionary and teacher with a deep love of Japan and a wife he was forced to leave behind.

For so many, the battle lines of their hearts did not align with their passports as government officials made judgment calls that reverberated across time. Faced with too few bodies to trade and desperate to free Americans from perilous conditions, the United States uprooted and traded Japanese immigrants from Latin America, often against their will, while Japanese imprisoned in camps —many of them American citizens—were forced to choose between expulsion to a war zone or an uncertain future behind barbed wire.

Safe Passage tells us important things about belonging, migration, and the hurdles to pursuing humanitarian action in wartime.

About the Author

Evelyn Iritani is the author of An Ocean Between Us: The Changing Relationship of Japan and the United States Told in Four Stories from the Life of an American Town. A former reporter for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and the Los Angeles Times, her reporting garnered numerous awards, including the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting on global economic issues and the George Polk Award.

Explore the enduring legacy of redlining through a dynamic evening of dialogue, discovery, and creative engagement. Robert K. Nelson and Riley Champine of the University of Richmond’s Digital Scholarship Lab, creators of the groundbreaking Mapping Inequality project, will discuss how redlining shaped urban development, the challenges of interpreting historical data, and the continuing impact of these policies on housing, environmental justice, and neighborhood change.

After the conversation, a Cartographic Play Fair, including zine-making, collaborative mapping, and interactive explorations of digital and archival projects, will encourage participants to reflect on L.A.’s past and imagine more equitable urban futures.

Bios:
Riley Champine is the Associate Director of the University of Richmond’s Digital Scholarship Lab. Before that, he was a Graphics Editor for National Geographic from 2016–2023 and served as the Manager of Digital Cartography. He earned a B.S. in Geography from the University of Oregon, and worked at the UO InfoGraphics Lab from 2013–2015.

Robert K. Nelson is Director of the Digital Scholarship Lab and Head of Digital Engagement at the University of Richmond’s Boatwright Library. He is editor of American Panorama: An Atlas of United States History, which includes the acclaimed Mapping Inequality project. His digital scholarship has received national recognition from the American Historical Association and the American Studies Association. Nelson teaches courses on U.S. slavery, antislavery movements, and the digital humanities.

DESCRIPTION:
USC students will investigate the impact of redlining on the neighborhoods surrounding Exposition Park and South Los Angeles in this interactive experience and guided walking tour.

Beginning in USC Special Collections, participants will examine historical maps, government records, photographs, and community documents that reveal how housing policies and planning decisions contributed to inequality.

The experience continues beyond the archive with a walking tour through areas historically graded by the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation, the former federal agency infamous for initiating redlining. Using a shared digital Learning Atlas, participants will compare historical records with present-day realities, document their observations, and reflect on the relationship between policy, place, and lived experience.

DESCRIPTION:
How do cities remember and forget the communities that once lived there? Explore the dramatic transformation of Downtown Los Angeles in an immersive experience focused on Bunker Hill, one of the most significant sites of redevelopment and displacement in Los Angeles.

Participants will begin at the Los Angeles Public Library’s Special Collections, examining maps, photographs, redevelopment records, and other historical materials that reveal how Bunker Hill was reshaped over time.

A guided walking tour of Bunker Hill will then bring those stories into the present. Participants will compare historical records with the built environment, and consider how decisions about housing and redevelopment continue to shape urban life today.

Representatives from Meow Wolf L.A. will give additional background information on the making of the experience.

DESCRIPTION:
Join us for a screening of Manufacturing the Enemy, a powerful documentary that explores how Western media has constructed and perpetuated harmful narratives about Arabs and Muslims—and the real-world consequences of those portrayals. Drawing connections across entertainment, journalism, politics, and digital culture, the film invites audiences to look critically at the stories that influence public perception and policy.

Post-Screening Conversation and Reception
Following the screening, filmmaker and USC alumnus Sufian Abulohom will be joined by featured experts Evelyn Alsultany, Hatem Bazian, and Dalia Fahmy for a conversation and Q&A on the film. A reception will follow.

Bios:
Sufian Abulohom is a Yemeni American filmmaker based in Los Angeles. A USC School of Cinematic Arts MFA graduate, his films have screened at AFI Fest, HollyShorts, and the St. Louis International Film Festival. His work has been featured by The Hollywood Reporter, Los Angeles Times, and BBC Culture. Through documentary and narrative filmmaking, he seeks to humanize and amplify Arab, Muslim, and Arab American stories.

Evelyn Alsultany is a professor of American Studies and Ethnicity at USC and a leading scholar of Arab and Muslim representation in U.S. media. She is the author of Broken: The Failed Promise of Muslim Inclusion and Arabs and Muslims in the Media. Alsultany has consulted for major studios including Netflix, Amazon, and NBCUniversal and co-developed the Obeidi-Alsultany Test, a tool for improving representations of Muslims in film and television.

Hatem Bazian is co-founder and professor of Islamic Law and Theology at Zaytuna College, the first accredited Muslim liberal arts college in the United States. He also teaches at UC Berkeley, where he founded the Islamophobia Research and Documentation Project. His scholarship focuses on Islamophobia, race, religion, and the experiences of Muslim communities in the United States and beyond.

Dalia Fahmy is Associate Professor of Political Science at Long Island University. Her research focuses on U.S. foreign policy, political Islam, democratization, and the Middle East. She has authored and edited several books and has published widely on Islamophobia and international politics. Fahmy is a frequent commentator whose work has appeared in outlets including CNN, PBS, CNBC, The Washington Post, and Al Jazeera.

How can shade help us live better in a hotter Los Angeles? Through hands-on workshops, a guided campus walk, a thought-provoking panel, a movement performance, and exhibition of student and faculty work, Sunshine to Shade: Moving to Cool invites participants to consider how shade functions in our hot city. Discover new ways of seeing and designing for the spaces around you while imagining a cooler, more resilient future.

1 to 2 p.m. | Shade as Care: A Guided Peace Garden Walk
USC Peace Garden
Slow down, step into the shade, and experience the USC Peace Garden through mindfulness practices and guided observation with Kiel Shaub (EXL Lab @ USC; Physical Education & Mind Body Health), exploring how trees, plants, and landscape design influence comfort, focus, and well-being. The session concludes with a walk across campus to the Architecture Courtyard, revealing shaded pathways, microclimates, and the role of shade in everyday life.

2 to 3:30 p.m. | Workshops in the Architecture Courtyard
Workshop 1 – Sun to Shade: Building Cool Together
Join designer Tom Gottelier (Designers on Holiday) and architect Andrew Seiger (A General Office) for a hands-on workshop where participants work together to build a full-scale shade structure. Along the way, explore cooling strategies, design principles, and how shade can support gathering and comfort in public life.

Workshop 2 – Capturing the Cool: Mapping Sun and Shade Through Time
Create a small-scale sundial and explore how shade moves and transforms throughout the day. Led by Hannah Wear and Kevin Parkhurst (Greener Empowerment Foundation / Design Integration Group), this workshop invites participants to see shade as a dynamic element that we can anticipate, design for, and intentionally shape in a hotter Los Angeles.

3:30 to 5 p.m. | Designing for Shade: Rethinking Sun, Space, and Well-Being in Los Angeles

How is Los Angeles adapting to a hotter future? Join historian William Deverell, environmental policy scholar Edith de Guzman, ShadeLA collaborator Marianna Babboni, Los Angeles City Forest Officer Rachel Malarich, documentarian Carey Lundin, and landscape architect Esther Margulies for a conversation about civic cultural shifts, shade adaptation strategies, and shade consciousness across the city’s infrastructure and public spaces.

5 to 7 p.m. | Collective Manifestation: Exhibition, Performance, and Reception
Architecture Galleries and Courtyard
The evening concludes with a site-responsive performance by USC Kaufman School of Dance faculty member Jennifer Lott and architect Kevin Sherrod. Guests are also invited to explore an exhibition developed in dialogue with ShadeLA and Public Exchange (USC/UCLA) that features student work, documentation of the Peace Garden practices, and responses to regional shade design initiatives.

During this time, light refreshments will be available in the courtyard, providing opportunities for participants, faculty, students, and community partners to continue conversations and engage with the exhibition and performance.

Experience one of cinema’s most ambitious sensory experiments in this rare screening of Scent of Mystery (1960), the only feature film originally presented in Smell-O-Vision. Through a contemporary recreation of the original scent system—combining ambient aromas, localized scent delivery, and live performance—you'll encounter the film in a way few audiences have experienced in more than half a century.

About the Film
Blending suspense, comedy, and romance, Scent of Mystery follows an Englishman who uncovers a murder plot against a young heiress while vacationing in Spain. After enlisting the help of a local cab driver, he races to protect her amid a web of intrigue, forged identities, and shady figures in picturesque Spanish locales.

Directed by Jack Cardiff, the film stars Denholm Elliott and supporting roles by Peter Lorre, Diana Dors, Paul Lucas, and a cameo appearance by Elizabeth Taylor.

She is the founding organizer of Paper Cameras Press, which develops educational resources for studying photography, and co-organizes Armenian Creatives, an artist-run publishing platform supporting experimental diasporic expression.

DESCRIPTION:
Experience a screening of artist and filmmaker Hande Sever’s History-Geography, an experimental documentary film that examines German and Ottoman imperialism in West Asia during World War I through archival photographs and documents, including a personal photo album made by a German officer stationed in the former Ottoman Empire and dedicated to a distant lover. The album’s intimate images are set against the broader traces of colonial violence in the region, revealing the uneasy proximity between personal memory and imperial history. History-Geography asks how history is told, whose voices are preserved, and what forms of embedded knowledge are left behind.

Post-Screening Conversation and Reception:
Following the screening, Sever and sound artist Lara Sarkissian will join moderator Mashinka Firunts Hakopian for a conversation about the film’s creative process and the role of visual archives. A reception will follow, offering an opportunity to continue the conversation with fellow attendees, artists, and scholars.

Mashinka Firunts Hakopian is a writer, artist, and scholar whose work explores media, technology, and speculative futures. Her multidisciplinary projects and curatorial work have been presented at REDCAT, MASS MoCA, OXY ARTS, the Ford Foundation Gallery, and international exhibitions.

Lara Sarkissian is a Los Angeles–based electronic musician and sound artist whose work draws on diasporic cultures, sonic archives, and experimental electronic composition. Through performances, installations, broadcasts, and film scores, she explores regional electronic traditions and Armenian archival sound. Her work has been presented internationally at venues including MoMA PS1, Centre Pompidou, MASS MoCA, the Venice Biennale, and The Music Center Los Angeles.

Travel across centuries of musical innovation in an evening that pairs beloved Baroque masterpieces with a landmark contemporary work. The USC Thornton Chamber Orchestra, led by Dr. Lucinda Carver, opens with J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 and G.F. Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks, two celebrated Baroque works that are known for their vitality and grandeur. Then, Dr. Cristian Grases will conduct the USC Thornton Chamber Orchestra and USC Thornton Chamber Singers in Alberto Grau’s award-winning La Doncella, which blends drama, energy, and texture in a striking counterpart to Bach and Handel.

An inspiring evening will showcase the role of music in fostering equity, opportunity, and community with presentations by choral leaders María Guinand and Alberto Grau, who created the groundbreaking initiative Construir Cantando to empower young people in Venezuela through choral music, and performances by the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus and Estorinos, a youth choir from Mexico.

What to Expect
Dr. Guinand will kick-off the evening with a presentation about Construir Cantando, its nearly 40-year legacy, and its impact on social development through choral music. She will then join Maestro Grau for a panel conversation about the challenges and benefits of arts-based social impact projects.

Following the short panel, audience members will get to see this work in action with a concert showcase featuring the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus and Estorninos, the premiere ensemble of Promotora de las Bellas Artes from Mexico.
