Over two dynamic days of panels, roundtables, keynotes, and performances, the 24th annual Pop Conference returns as the world’s leading gathering devoted to music writing and popular music studies, and the longest-running conference devoted to scholarship and criticism in the field. Mayhem captures the turbulence that defines the present moment: technological upheaval, political volatility, media precarity, and seismic shifts in the making, ownership, and consumption of music. That turbulence hurtles us to the brink, a charged space of instability and uncertainty that gives rise to new forms and new possibilities. Pop music has always flourished in perilous times. In periods of disruption and collapse, artists, writers, and critics alike have transformed crisis into sound, language, and community.

Held for the third consecutive year at the USC Thornton School of Music in Los Angeles, this year’s Pop Conference convenes leading scholars, journalists, writers, and musicians to explore the work that pop music and music writing do when the stakes are high and the future feels unsettled. Topics range from Lil Wayne and Prince to Cowboy Carter and Brat culture; from copyright, pirate radio, and music stans to KPop Demon Hunters and new pop mythologies; from queer and trans erasures in pop and from platform fandoms; from Bad Bunny and the Sinners soundtrack to the blues in an age shaped by algorithms. At a time when so much feels fragile, the Pop Conference gathers us at the brink to listen, to argue, and to imagine what comes next.

Following the opening-night keynote on March 12, the conference continues on March 13 and 14 with two full days of programming (9:00 am–6:00 pm), including panels, roundtables, mentorship sessions, and performances. All sessions are open to the general public and free with advance registration.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

All around the world we’ve been drawing suns in the top corner of our pages. Oh how tender it is when our corners align! First one big, full, sun. Then many suns. And underneath it all, we’re holding hands.

We begin with a 650-square-foot unstretched canvas that lived outside as much as it did inside. It was often dragged around with the help of good friends and kind strangers. Time collapses on this scale. Fast remembers slow. Big returns to small. Cartoonish snuggles up to drippy. And classical is learning to live with messy. Nearby, theatrical objects and playful movements are narratively entangled with the painting, and turn the rest of the gallery into a theatre, a house party, and in my wildest dreams, a forest.

Using the “fourth wall” as a medium, The Last Corner Sun wrestles with how chaos and intimacy interact on both closely personal and absurdly existential levels.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Sections presents a group of new and recent works by the artist Calvin Miceli-Nelson. The selected works exist as part of a larger narrative project comprised of sculpture, painting, and fiction writing titled Seeing Yourself From Above. Combining assemblage sculptures with surrealist fiction, the exhibition presents various methods for examining the mythology and language that surrounds ideas of illness and insanity in both personal and historical contexts.

Excerpts from the written text of Seeing Yourself From Above will be read live during the opening and closing of the exhibition.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Calvin Miceli-Nelson (b.1993) is an artist based in Los Angeles. His work examines themes of madness, memory, and mythology through sculpture and fiction writing. Using written word, spoken language, and found objects as methods for exploring narrative, his practice functions as an investigation of the language that surrounds ideas of insanity and illness. His work has been shown at Freddy, James Fuentes, and Page NYC in New York, As It Stands and Gene’s Dispensary in Los Angeles, and 4649 in Tokyo. He received his BFA from Washington University in St. Louis in 2015. He is currently an MFA candidate at USC.

For our inaugural conversation, we welcome Sara Moonves, editor in chief of W magazine, who has imagined the magazine as a platform for fashion, culture and contemporary storytelling, in dialogue with Jonathan Anderson, creative director of Dior, celebrated for his intellectual approach and fearless reinvention of modern luxury.

With the fashion industry in flux and new talent redefining legacy brands, Moonves and Anderson will explore how Dior — and luxury itself — is being reimagined for a changing world. Drawing on their long professional history, their discussion will examine the intersection of fashion, media and culture: the power of storytelling, the role of image-making and film, and how designers navigate rapid change across artistic vision, business, technology and global audiences.

The program will include a student Q&A and will be followed by an informal mixer, offering students the opportunity to connect more directly with leaders and professionals from across the fashion community.

About the Book: In Rebuilding Histories in the Roman World, Ann Marie Yasin reveals the savvy and subtle ways in which Roman and late Roman patrons across the Mediterranean modulated connections to the past and expectations for the future through their material investments in old architecture. Then as now, reactivation and modification of previously built structures required direct engagement with issues of tradition and novelty, longevity and ephemerality, security and precarity – in short, with how time is perceived in the built environment. The book argues that Roman patrons and audiences were keenly sensitive to all of these issues. It traces spatial and decorative configurations of rebuilt structures, including temples and churches, civic and entertainment buildings, roads and aqueducts, as well as theways such projects were marked and celebrated through ritual and monumental text. In doing so, Yasin charts how local communities engaged with the time of their buildings at a material, experiential level over the course of the first six centuries CE.

About the Author: Ann Marie Yasin is a Professor of Art History and Classics at the University of Southern California specializing in Roman and late antique architecture and material culture. She is the author of Saints and Church Spaces in the Late Antique Mediterranean: Architecture, Cult, and Community (Cambridge University Press, 2009), and more recent studies on memory and sacred landscapes, spatiality and perception of devotional graffiti, and architectural frameworks of early Christian relic installations.

LA2026 is presented by the USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute. It brings together members of the public and humanities scholars for eighteen conversations about museum and cultural exhibitions at six partnering institutions in the Los Angeles region, including the Autry Museum of the American West, The Huntington, LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes / El El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, and USC Libraries. Each exhibition frames conversations about the anniversary of 1776 from the perspective of California and the West. At a time when so much feels fragile, the Pop Conference gathers us at the brink to listen, to argue, and to imagine what comes next.

Following the opening-night keynote on March 12, the conference continues on March 13 and 14 with two full days of programming (9:00 am–6:00 pm), including panels, roundtables, mentorship sessions, and performances. All sessions are open to the general public and free with advance registration.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Sections presents a group of new and recent works by the artist Calvin Miceli-Nelson. The selected works exist as part of a larger narrative project comprised of sculpture, painting, and fiction writing titled Seeing Yourself From Above. Combining assemblage sculptures with surrealist fiction, the exhibition presents various methods for examining the mythology and language that surrounds ideas of illness and insanity in both personal and historical contexts.

Excerpts from the written text of Seeing Yourself From Above will be read live during the opening and closing of the exhibition.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Calvin Miceli-Nelson (b.1993) is an artist based in Los Angeles. His work examines themes of madness, memory, and mythology through sculpture and fiction writing. Using written word, spoken language, and found objects as methods for exploring narrative, his practice functions as an investigation of the language that surrounds ideas of insanity and illness. His work has been shown at Freddy, James Fuentes, and Page NYC in New York, As It Stands and Gene’s Dispensary in Los Angeles, and 4649 in Tokyo. He received his BFA from Washington University in St. Louis in 2015. He is currently an MFA candidate at USC.

FEATURED SPEAKERS:

Ken Gonzales-Day is a Los Angeles-based artist whose interdisciplinary practice considers the historical construction of race and the limits of representational systems ranging from lynching photographs to educational museum displays. His widely exhibited Erased Lynching series (ongoing), along with the publication of Lynching in the West: 1850-1935 (Duke University Press, 2006) transformed the understanding of racialized violence in the United States and raised awareness of the lynching of Latinos, Native Americans, Asians, and African-Americans in California, and to see these collective acts of violence within the larger history of policing, anti-immigration movements, and racial terror lynchings.

Gonzales-Day received a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, an MFA from the University of California, Irvine, and an MA from Hunter College in NYC. He was a Van Lier Fellow in the Whitney Museum's Independent Study Program and his work has been widely exhibited: including The J. Paul Getty Museum; LACMA; MOCA; Luis De Jesus Los Angeles; Eastman Museum, Rochester; The Tamayo Museum, Mexico City; The Palais de Tokyo, Paris; The New Museum, CUE Art Foundation, The Kitchen, Jack Shainmann, and El Museo in NYC; The Generali in Vienna; and Thomas Dane Gallery in London, among others.

Tatiana Flores is the Jefferson Scholars Foundation Edgar F. Shannon, Jr. distinguished professor of art history at the University of Virginia. A scholar and curator of modern and contemporary Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx art, she authored the award-winning article “‘Latinidad Is Cancelled’: Confronting an Anti-Black Construct” (2021). She curated the critically acclaimed exhibition Relational Undercurrents: Contemporary Art of the Caribbean Archipelago, which toured five venues from 2017 to 2019, for the Getty Foundation’s Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA initiative and was director for the Rutgers Center for Women in the Arts, where she oversaw several exhibitions and convened major programs, including the 2023 conference Art, Gender, and Disability, which received major support from the Ford Foundation.

Luke Fidler is Assistant Professor of Art History at the University of Southern California, where his research focuses on the art, material culture, and political economy of medieval Europe. He is currently working on a book about sculpture's ambivalent relationship to forms of coercion in the twelfth century; his medieval scholarship has appeared in, or is forthcoming from, The Art Bulletin, Critical Inquiry, Gesta, Representations, and RES. His writing about contemporary art and social movements has appeared in many venues, including ASAP/Journal and The Brooklyn Rail. Committed to building more emancipatory futures for art history, he has taught with the Odyssey Project in Chicago and at Stateville Correctional Center as a member of the Prison+Neighborhood Arts/Education Project.

Fidler received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 2022 and previously managed the Mellon-funded "Visualizing Abolition" project at the Institute of the Arts and Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz. His scholarship has also been supported by a wide range of organizations, including the Paul Mellon Centre, the Henry Moore Foundation, and the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art. During the 2025-26 academic year, he is a fellow at the Society for the Humanities at Cornell University.

Amelia Jones is the Robert A. Day Professor and Vice Dean of Faculty and Research at the Roski School of Art & Design, USC, and is a curator and scholar of contemporary art, performance, and feminist and sexuality studies. Recent publications include Seeing Differently: A History and Theory of Identification and the Visual Arts (2012); a volume co-edited with Erin Silver, Otherwise: Imagining Queer Feminist Art Histories (2016); and the edited special issue “On Trans/Performance” of “Performance Research” (2016). Jones’s catalogue Queer Communion: Ron Athey (2020), co-edited with Andy Campbell, and which accompanied a retrospective of Athey’s work at Participant Inc. (New York) and ICA (Los Angeles), was listed among Best Art Books 2020 in the New York Times. Her 2021 book, entitled In Between Subjects: A Critical Genealogy of Queer Performance, explores the history of performance art and queer theory since the 1950s, from a queer feminist point of view. She is currently working on a book entitled Lifework: Against Cultural Capitalism, addressing creative life in the face of neoliberalism and structural racism in the Euro-American university and art complex.

Panelists will discuss food and its relationship to regional identity from the late 1700s to today, from Mexico to Los Angeles. They will consider how Angelenos and our neighbors have experienced food pathways over time and how those ideas contributed to health, society, and economic wellbeing.

LA2026 is presented by the USC-Huntington Early Modern Studies Institute. It brings together members of the public and humanities scholars for eighteen conversations about museum and cultural exhibitions at six partnering institutions in the Los Angeles region, including the Autry Museum of the American West, The Huntington, LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes / El El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, and USC Libraries. Each exhibition frames conversations about the anniversary of 1776 from the perspective of California and the West. Each discussion will focus on specific items from one of the partner exhibitions, encouraging public discussions about national identities, relationships between regional and national narratives, participating in democracy, and human relationships to the land.

We begin with a 650-square-foot unstretched canvas that lived outside as much as it did inside. It was often dragged around with the help of good friends and kind strangers. Time collapses on this scale. Fast remembers slow. Big returns to small. Cartoonish snuggles up to drippy. And classical is learning to live with messy. Nearby, theatrical objects and playful movements are narratively entangled with the painting, and turn the rest of the gallery into a theatre, a house party, and in my wildest dreams, a forest.

Using the “fourth wall” as a medium, The Last Corner Sun wrestles with how chaos and intimacy interact on both closely personal and absurdly existential levels.

All around the world we’ve been drawing suns in the top corner of our pages. Oh how tender it is when our corners align! First one big, full, sun. Then many suns. And underneath it all, we’re holding hands.

We begin with a 650-square-foot unstretched canvas that lived outside as much as it did inside. It was often dragged around with the help of good friends and kind strangers. Time collapses on this scale. Fast remembers slow. Big returns to small. Cartoonish snuggles up to drippy. And classical is learning to live with messy. Nearby, theatrical objects and playful movements are narratively entangled with the painting, and turn the rest of the gallery into a theatre, a house party, and in my wildest dreams, a forest.

Using the “fourth wall” as a medium, The Last Corner Sun wrestles with how chaos and intimacy interact on both closely personal and absurdly existential levels.

Infrastructural Aporia: data politics and temporal governance in the metropolitan train system in Rio de Janeiro

Abstract

In March 2020, Rio de Janeiro's train ridership collapsed from 600,000 to 130,000 daily passengers as the COVID-19 pandemic hit, triggering a financial crisis and persistent indeterminacy over how to restore stable operations. This collapse intensified long cycles of deterioration rooted in decades of unfulfilled promises. Once central to projects of national integration and modernization in the nineteenth century, Rio's trains were progressively marginalized throughout the twentieth century in favour of roads, metro systems, and later Olympic mega-projects, even as they remained indispensable to the city's racialized peripheries. This article traces how decay is governed as an ongoing, unresolved condition through what I call infrastructural aporia: a temporal trap where renovation becomes unattainable yet dismantlement remains unthinkable, leaving the system saturated with accumulated promises and deferred futures. Drawing on ethnographic research (2022-2024), the article demonstrates how the train decay operated as a "long fact" – an entity inseparable from its consequences and temporal framings – rendered legible and operationalizable through ridership data. Rather than disputing the interpretation of agreed-upon figures, bureaucrats, activists, executives, and retired workers contested which temporal cut of ridership data should define what the crisis was. The article shows how data did not merely reflect decline but actively configured the diverging temporalities through which the crisis was defined, responsibility allocated, and possible futures imagined or foreclosed.

Marcos Lopes Campos

Marcos Lopes Campos is an anthropologist and a Postdoctoral Researcher in the International Postdoctoral Program at the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning (CEBRAP), funded by a FAPESP Postdoctoral Fellowship. He holds a PhD in Sociology from the Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ), Brazil, and was a Postdoctoral Researcher in Germany, where he was affiliated with the Georg Simmel Center for Urban Studies at Humboldt University, Berlin. His current research examines the relations between urban infrastructure, violence, and accumulation through an ethnographic study of the discursive and material management of accidents and extreme events on Rio de Janeiro’s metropolitan railway system. His doctoral dissertation, funded by the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research Foundation (IJURR) PhD Studentship (2018) and other grants, focused on livelihoods and future-making among black and poor poets from the peripheries and favelas of Rio de Janeiro. This work earned the 2022 Honorable Mention in the Maurício de Almeida Abreu Best PhD Dissertations Competition, awarded by the Municipal Institute of Urbanism Pereira Passos (IPP) of the City Hall of Rio de Janeiro. Marcos’ research spans a wide range of topics within Urban Studies, including public policy, urban political economy, infrastructures, futures, livelihoods, governance, illegal markets, and violence. He has published in leading journals, including International Journal of Urban and Regional Research (IJURR), Current Anthropology, DADOS, and Novos Estudos–CEBRAP, and has contributed to edited volumes by Wiley, EDUERJ, and EDUNESP. He is currently an associate researcher of the following groups: Grupo Casa (IESP-UERJ) and the Mobilities: Theories, Topics, and Methods group (MTTM, USP)

Title: Dynamic Schrödinger bridges beyond entropy

Abstract: Over the past decade, the Schrödinger bridge problem has emerged as a central tool for modeling the evolution of uncertainty in dynamical systems. It describes the most likely stochastic evolution connecting two observed distributions and forms the dynamic, entropy-regularized analogue of optimal transport. Unlike its static counterpart, the dynamic formulation explicitly models the temporal evolution of probability flows, a feature that has proven essential in modern generative modeling via diffusion processes, where data distributions are learned through time-dependent stochastic transformations. While the classical Schrödinger problem relies on relative entropy, which provides analytical convenience, this choice can be restrictive: it yields diffuse stochastic trajectories and imposes a specific log-penalty structure that may not capture robustness or the structural features of the system. General divergence-based penalties offer greater flexibility, allowing the model to capture alternative notions of discrepancy and sensitivity. Indeed, insights from quadratically regularized optimal transport, a static analogue of the problem considered in this project, suggest that L^2-type penalizations can induce sparsity in the transport plan, emphasizing the most relevant trajectories while downweighting minor fluctuations. In this work, we leverage stochastic control tools and convex duality to extend these ideas to the dynamic, path-space setting. The talk is based on a joint work with Ludovic Tangpi.

Title: Conformal field theory: from magnets to Hodge numbers

Abstract: I will introduce the notion of a conformal field theory (CFT), which are quantum field theories at the endpoints of renormalization group flows. CFTs show up in many areas of physics, including second-order phase transitions, string worldsheet theories, and quantum gravity in anti de Sitter space. CFTs also have applications in pure math, and can be thought of as a kind of "generalization" of geometric objects. As an example, I will show how topological invariants of certain manifolds (such as Hodge numbers) are in one-to-one correspondence with a special class of quantum states in a 2d CFT.

Title: Instantaneous Type I blow-up and non-uniqueness of smooth solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations

Abstract: For any smooth, divergence-free initial data, we construct a solution of the Navier--Stokes equations that exhibits Type I blow-up of the L^\infty norm, while remaining smooth. An instantaneous injection of energy from infinite wavenumber initiates a bifurcation from the classical solution, producing an infinite family of spatially smooth solutions with the same data and thereby violating uniqueness of the Cauchy problem. A key ingredient is the first known construction of a complete inverse energy cascade realized by a classical Navier-Stokes flow, which transfers energy from infinitely high to low frequencies. This is a joint work with Mimi Dai and Stan Palasek.

Title: The Math Teaching Atlas

Abstract: Mathematics is a mountain. Students do not need more stories about the view; they need a trail they can actually walk. This talk presents the Math Teaching Atlas, a humanistic and student-centered framework for mathematics education, grounded in two decades in the student’s seat. We break arguments into route units (one step, one explicit justification) and routeways (chains of route units), then build a roadmap of multiple valid routeways to the same destination. The principle is simple: each next step should be visible, within reach, and guided by familiar anchors (what the student already knows). To go further, we will see how a mathematical compass (motivation) and driving simulations (concrete examples) help students extend existing routeways and trailblaze new ones, turning opaque lectures into navigable climbs. Together, these elements create a graphical user interface (GUI) for mathematics, bringing the clarity of advanced math to “the rest of us.”

Hannah Burstein is a curator, researcher, and public programmer who was born, raised, and is based in Los Angeles. She is the curatorial associate at The Brick, a nonprofit contemporary exhibition space where she has worked since 2019, contributing to exhibitions including MONUMENTS, for which she served as co-editor of the accompanying publication; Life on Earth: Art & Eco Feminism; and Nancy Buchanan: A Retrospective. While at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland (2014-18), she co-curated performance pieces by artists including Hosey Corona, Ada Pinkston, Paul Rucker, Alexander D'Agostino, and Laure Drogoul, among others. Her interests include contemporary interventions with historical objects, constructions of race in public space, alternatives to traditional museum interpretation, and horror.

ABOUT PAULA KROLL

Paula Kroll is an Assistant Curator at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) where she has organized numerous exhibitions. She is the curator of Haegue Yang: Star-Crossed Rendezvous, presented in collaboration with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and is part of the curatorial team for MONUMENTS (2025), co-organized with The Brick. She was co-curator of Paul Pfeiffer: Prologue to the Story of the Birth of Freedom (2023), a retrospective of twenty-five years of Pfeiffer’s practice which traveled to the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao (2024) and Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2025). Kroll graduated from the master’s program in Modern and Contemporary Art: Critical and Curatorial Studies at Columbia University with a thesis focused on contemporary art from Central and Eastern Europe.

All around the world we’ve been drawing suns in the top corner of our pages. Oh how tender it is when our corners align! First one big, full, sun. Then many suns. And underneath it all, we’re holding hands.

We begin with a 650-square-foot unstretched canvas that lived outside as much as it did inside. It was often dragged around with the help of good friends and kind strangers. Time collapses on this scale. Fast remembers slow. Big returns to small. Cartoonish snuggles up to drippy. And classical is learning to live with messy. Nearby, theatrical objects and playful movements are narratively entangled with the painting, and turn the rest of the gallery into a theatre, a house party, and in my wildest dreams, a forest.

Using the “fourth wall” as a medium, The Last Corner Sun wrestles with how chaos and intimacy interact on both closely personal and absurdly existential levels.

Topic: Urban land use and transportation planning policies rely on accessibility metrics to determine where to locate public transit and urban services. However, most accessibility measures are built on static assumptions that people start their trip from homes, they are free all day, businesses are always open, and public transportation is always running. This talk introduces a dynamic, people-based approach that measures when and where essential services are actually reachable in daily life. Using Los Angeles County as a case study, this study integrates millions of anonymized smartphone GPS records (Dewey GWS), multimodal travel networks (OpenStreetMap and GTFS), and essential-service POIs with operating hours (SafeGraph) to compare static and dynamic accessibility measures. Results show that static models systematically overestimate real-world access, especially for time-limited services such as food, healthcare, and groceries, highlighting the importance of time-sensitive accessibility measures in planning practice.

About the Speaker:

Yuquan (Wendy) Zhou is a PhD Candidate in Urban Planning and Development at the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy, specializing in geospatial analytics. Advised by Dr. Geoff Boeing, her dissertation focuses on dynamic accessibility and develops a new framework to measure spatiotemporal accessibility to essential services. This work has won the 40th Annual Charles M. Tiebout Prize in Regional Science.

Chinese Stand Up: The Forms of Laughter and Politics in Contemporary China

In this talk, I will be taking an experimental approach to introduce my thoughts and plans for the proposed dissertation project in a genre-bending way. The presentation will be based on my past four-year (2022-2026) preliminary research with Chinese mandarin-speaking stand-up comedians from the Southern China Bay area (Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Zhuhai), Northeast China, and Los Angeles. With some vivid ethnographic vignettes, I will try to answer the following questions: Why study Chinese stand-up comedy, why now? What anthropological topics will this project join, and how? What broader contributions this project aspire to make to anthropology, and other related disciplines? How my “native” positionality, both as Chinese mainlander and stand-up practitioner, will be reflected and critically engaged.

Waiting for a New Heart

Short Abstract: This presentation introduces an outline of questions into the stakes involved for patients waiting for a heart transplant. I am proposing a hospital ethnography into the experience of patients on the heart transplant waitlist. Critically ill, they are waiting for a death — either that of the donor or their own. These patients are maintained on a variety of medications and mechanical devices to support their failing heart until a new one is offered. Thus, they are confined to the hospital to wait. Life is structured in a new way within the hospital by new actors and technologies. Questions of agency and affect arise. Further, I want to work through a seemingly paradoxical temporal aspect of this waiting experience as both mundane routine and anxious proximity to death are held in tension.

Disguised as a family planning program during Peru’s internal armed conflict, a campaign was launched by the government of Alberto Fujimori that resulted in the forced sterilization of thousands of women of poor, rural, and Indigenous-language-speaking backgrounds. The new book Together We Fight explores Indigenous and non-Indigenous women’s brutal experiences of forced sterilizations and their subsequent activism for reproductive rights and justice. Drawing on a vast trove of first-person testimony, Prof. Ñusta Carranza Ko highlights the understudied voices of victim-survivors, unpacking their ideas of justice and examining the work of allies that have accompanied them in their activism. Focusing on the stories, struggles, and lived experiences of victim-survivors, Prof. Carranza Ko argues that the campaign was genocidal.

Title: Shrinkage to Infinity: Reducing Test Error by Inflating the Minimum Norm Interpolator in Linear Models

Abstract: Hastie et al. (2022) found that ridge regularization is essential in high dimensional linear regression y=β^Tx+ϵ with isotropic co-variates x∈ℝ^d and n samples at fixed d/n. However, Hastie et al. (2022) also notes that when the co-variates are anisotropic and β is aligned with the top eigenvalues of population covariance, the “situation is qualitatively different.” In the present article, we make precise this observation for linear regression with highly anisotropic covariances and diverging d/n. We find that simply scaling up (or inflating) the minimum ℓ_2 norm interpolator by a constant greater than one can improve the generalization error. This is in sharp contrast to traditional regularization/shrinkage prescriptions. Moreover, we use a data-splitting technique to produce consistent estimators that achieve generalization error comparable to that of the optimally inflated minimum-norm interpolator. Our proof relies on apparently novel matching upper and lower bounds for expectations of Gaussian random projections for a general class of anisotropic covariance matrices when d/n→∞.

EXHIBITION STATEMENT

Enigmatic Hue presents a body of work featuring an amalgamation of paintings and sculptors. One component of the exhibition is large scale abstract paintings; emblems of work transposed into craft from the Gullah Geechie sweet grass basket culture. In conversation with a series of indigo blue portraits that reflect identity, spirituality, and endurance. Indigo, once a symbol of labor and exploitation, becomes a pigment of resistance and memory in its deep hue, a metaphor for the layered histories embedded in skin, water, and land. In tandem with painting, I am exploring glass-fused surfaces, transforming painterly gestures into translucent layers that echo both fragility and permanence.

This body of work delves deeply into the connections between the broader diasporic communities. My research is centered around the exploration of Gullah Geechee cultural traditions. Said traditions include sweetgrass basket weaving, use of blue glass as a form of spiritual protection, and the interplay between the histories of rice and cotton cultivation. These material and histories form a conceptual foundation that connects my own ancestral narrative to the broader legacies of Black labor, resistance, survival, and creativity in the American South. ABOUT THE ARTIST

Bridget DeLee is a Los Angeles based artist, whose practice primarily spans painting and mixed media sculpture. She frequently incorporates materials with cultural significance to Los Angeles and the broader African diaspora. DeLee’s paintings interrelate with a limited color palette and skin pigment that displaces realism, shifting focus to inherent meaning and spiritual depth. Her work is inspired by family photos, urban changes, and sociopolitical themes like race, equity, and displacement. Her recent research and practice concentrated on South Carolina, emphasizing the customary art and practices retained by the Gullah Geechee people.

DeLee’s work has been exhibited at Durden and Ray, VAMA Gallery, The Mistake Room, Track16, Sovern LA and Band of Vices. As an emerging artist, she has contributed to discussions on panels such as Art & Activism: Through the African American Experience. Her sculpture “In Between” was featured in the Los Angeles Times article. Her recognitions include the Winston Russell Hewitt Scholarship, VAMA Scholarship Award, and the Macomber travel grant from USC Roski. DeLee holds a B.A. in Studio Art from California State University- Dominquez Hills. She is a Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Fellow. Presently, she is a Master of Fine Art candidate at the USC.

The Hayes Barnard Sustainability Fellowship experience is a transformational two years. Students will enroll in program-tailored courses for all four semesters of the fellowship, with monthly sustainability community guest speakers to discuss sustainability issues as well. In the final semester of the program, students will have a 15-week practicum experience, performing hands on sustainability work. By graduation, students will take their deepened appreciation for sustainability into their future endeavors, moving organizations towards more sustainable practices. We want our students to thrive as sustainability champions in any and all fields and positions. With sustainability becoming a vital part of the professional world, the Hayes Barnard Sustainability Fellowship experience will provide the competitive advantage needed for our students to thrive in their future endeavors.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

All around the world we’ve been drawing suns in the top corner of our pages. Oh how tender it is when our corners align! First one big, full, sun. Then many suns. And underneath it all, we’re holding hands.

We begin with a 650-square-foot unstretched canvas that lived outside as much as it did inside. It was often dragged around with the help of good friends and kind strangers. Time collapses on this scale. Fast remembers slow. Big returns to small. Cartoonish snuggles up to drippy. And classical is learning to live with messy. Nearby, theatrical objects and playful movements are narratively entangled with the painting, and turn the rest of the gallery into a theatre, a house party, and in my wildest dreams, a forest.

Using the “fourth wall” as a medium, The Last Corner Sun wrestles with how chaos and intimacy interact on both closely personal and absurdly existential levels.

EXHIBITION STATEMENT

Enigmatic Hue presents a body of work featuring an amalgamation of paintings and sculptors. One component of the exhibition is large scale abstract paintings; emblems of work transposed into craft from the Gullah Geechie sweet grass basket culture. In conversation with a series of indigo blue portraits that reflect identity, spirituality, and endurance. Indigo, once a symbol of labor and exploitation, becomes a pigment of resistance and memory in its deep hue, a metaphor for the layered histories embedded in skin, water, and land. In tandem with painting, I am exploring glass-fused surfaces, transforming painterly gestures into translucent layers that echo both fragility and permanence.

This body of work delves deeply into the connections between the broader diasporic communities. My research is centered around the exploration of Gullah Geechee cultural traditions. Said traditions include sweetgrass basket weaving, use of blue glass as a form of spiritual protection, and the interplay between the histories of rice and cotton cultivation. These material and histories form a conceptual foundation that connects my own ancestral narrative to the broader legacies of Black labor, resistance, survival, and creativity in the American South. ABOUT THE ARTIST

Bridget DeLee is a Los Angeles based artist, whose practice primarily spans painting and mixed media sculpture. She frequently incorporates materials with cultural significance to Los Angeles and the broader African diaspora. DeLee’s paintings interrelate with a limited color palette and skin pigment that displaces realism, shifting focus to inherent meaning and spiritual depth. Her work is inspired by family photos, urban changes, and sociopolitical themes like race, equity, and displacement. Her recent research and practice concentrated on South Carolina, emphasizing the customary art and practices retained by the Gullah Geechee people.

DeLee’s work has been exhibited at Durden and Ray, VAMA Gallery, The Mistake Room, Track16, Sovern LA and Band of Vices. As an emerging artist, she has contributed to discussions on panels such as Art & Activism: Through the African American Experience. Her sculpture “In Between” was featured in the Los Angeles Times article. Her recognitions include the Winston Russell Hewitt Scholarship, VAMA Scholarship Award, and the Macomber travel grant from USC Roski. DeLee holds a B.A. in Studio Art from California State University- Dominquez Hills. She is a Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Fellow. Presently, she is a Master of Fine Art candidate at the USC.

Join us for a coffee talk with Nivea Krishnan, Program Coordinator for Civics Matters at the Arizona Cardinals Football Club, the NFL’s only fully staffed youth civic education initiative. In this role, she is building a year-round civic learning program designed to reach more than 600,000 middle and high school students across Arizona, her home state. In addition to her role with the Cardinals, she is a Fellow with Expand Democracy, a national nonprofit advancing pro-democracy ideas, and leads youth engagement efforts for the Arizona Civics Coalition.

Previously, Nivea served as an English Teaching Assistant in Madrid through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. Throughout her career, Nivea has worked to advance civic participation, election reform, and education policy. Her future aspirations involve working in public interest law and impact litigation.

Nivea graduated from the University of Southern California in 2024 with degrees in Public Policy and Economics. At USC, she served as Vice President and Chief Justice of Undergraduate Student Government, published an award-winning honors thesis on the feasibility of implementing ranked choice voting in federal elections, and competed in Model UN.

Nivea Krishnan is a civic innovator and policy strategist serving as Senior Advisor at New Voters, Director of Youth Engagement for the Arizona Civics Coalition, and an Expand Democracy Fellow. With dual degrees in Economics and Public Policy from the University of Southern California, she focuses on election policy at the intersection of structural reform and grassroots civic participation. As Executive Director of New Voters during her undergraduate years, she led the organization through rapid expansion, pioneering a student-led voter registration model that prioritized peer-to-peer mentorship and registered over 80,000 new voters in just two years.

Description: What knowledge, what artistry, can a sentence hold? Whose rules must it follow? What kinds of personhood can it express, and how? How does genre shape what a sentence can be? This event brings together two professors and activists who have considered how to craft sentences that bridge the gap between creative and researched writing. We’ll talk about sentences we love, sentences we’re proud of, and sentences that changed what we think a sentence can do. But we’ll also consider “sentence” in a different, juridical, sense — as a judgement, a punishment. We’ll ask: how does remembering the double meaning of “sentence” help us see the overlap between our writing lives and our obligations to justice in the world?

V. V. Ganeshananthan (she/her) is the author of the novels Brotherless Night (winner of the 2024 Women's Prize for Fiction, the 2024 Carol Shields Prize, the 2023 Asian Prize, a New York Times Editors’ Choice, and an NPR Book of the Year) and Love Marriage (longlisted for the Women's Prize and named one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post). Her work has appeared in Granta, The New York Times, and The Best American Nonrequired Reading, among other publications. She teaches in the MFA program at the University of Minnesota, where she is a McKnight Presidential Fellow and professor of English. Since 2017, she has co-hosted Literary Hub’s Fiction/Non/Fiction podcast, which is about the intersection of literature and the news.

Kate Levin is Associate Professor (Teaching) of Writing at the University of Southern California, where she is co-founder and co-director of the Dornsife Prison Education Project. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Michigan, and is the winner of a Pushcart Prize. Her work has been published in The New York Times, the Boston Globe, the Nation, and a variety of literary journals.

Sabina Zonno, Research Associate in European Art at the Huntington Library, and Lynn Dodd, Professor of the Practice of Religion and Spatial Sciences at University of Southern California, will present, "Presence: the Pilgrimage of Reading of Medieval and Early Renaissance Manuscripts in Virtual Spaces."

This event combines book history with digital studies and happily involves hands-on instruction in the relationship between the two. Space somewhat limited.
The last half hour is designated for one-on-one engagement with virtual / digital media.

Organized by Heather James (Professor of English, Comparative Literature, and Classics at USC), the EMSI European Literature and Culture Seminar brings together scholars in Southern California who work in early modern, Renaissance, 18th-Century studies and find that their broad interests in reading, scholarship, and teaching range among fields and languages.

A powerful contribution of the humanities to the study of the environment is the ability to identify emotions that accompany their experience, in the case of both blue and green environments. Relatedly, the blue or oceanic humanities has at least some strains evoke marine environment through highly metaphorical and creative language and practices.

Cohen's paper inquires into correlating the imagination and emotions elicited by an environment with its physical reality attending to the case of how people felt about the Monterey shore in the 1930s. During this period, we have ample literary and cultural documentation about the area, in the writings of John Steinbeck as well as in popular newspapers, among other sources. We also have important scientific description by intertidal ecologists such as Ed Ricketts and Willis Hewatt. What can we learn from coordinating the two types of documentation about people’s relation to the shore? When are fantasies and emotions in sync with physical reality and if they are not, what can that disconnect reveal?

Richard Fliegel (Moderator): Richard Fliegel is Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs in the use Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, where he directs university-wide initiatives and develops interdisciplinary curricula designed to strengthen critical thinking and communication across fields. In addition 10 his academic leadership, Dr. Fliegel is an accomplished author of mystery novels and thrillers published by Bantam, Simon & Schuster, Chelmsford Press, and Open Road Media. He has written for television. including Star Trek: The Next Generation, co-created the Disney/ABC pilot El Coyote, and authored screenplays, stage plays, stories, and poetry. His background in storytelling and media brings a unique perspective to conversations about narrative, politics, and public engagement.Elissa Slotkin: Senator Elissa Slotkin is a former CIA analyst who served three tours in Iraq alongside the U.S. military and later held senior national security roles at the Pentagon and the White House under both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama. In 2018, she was elected to Congress in one of the nation’s most competitive districts — becoming the only Democrat in the country to represent a seat won by Romney and by Trump in both 2016 and 2020. In 2024, she was elected to represent Michigan in the U.S. Senate, winning by just 19,000 votes. Senator Slotkin currently serves on the Agriculture Committee, the Armed Services Committee, the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, and the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

All around the world we’ve been drawing suns in the top corner of our pages. Oh how tender it is when our corners align! First one big, full, sun. Then many suns. And underneath it all, we’re holding hands.

We begin with a 650-square-foot unstretched canvas that lived outside as much as it did inside. It was often dragged around with the help of good friends and kind strangers. Time collapses on this scale. Fast remembers slow. Big returns to small. Cartoonish snuggles up to drippy. And classical is learning to live with messy. Nearby, theatrical objects and playful movements are narratively entangled with the painting, and turn the rest of the gallery into a theatre, a house party, and in my wildest dreams, a forest.

Using the “fourth wall” as a medium, The Last Corner Sun wrestles with how chaos and intimacy interact on both closely personal and absurdly existential levels.

Drawing from ethnographic research from her book, The Power of Chinatown: Searching for Spatial Justice in Los Angeles (UC Press, 2024), Dr. Laureen D. Hom will discuss these complexities, contradictions, and possibilities of defining and building community power in Los Angeles Chinatown and the implications for how we define and practice equitable community development in both the neighborhood and across the city.

The DUPSA & Urban Growth Seminars are a series of seminars sponsored by the USC Sol Price School of Public Policy to highlight current issues in urban growth and development. Each of the knowledgeable speakers in this series demonstrates the role of his or her respective field in urban society by blending academic analysis and theory with real world issues and solutions. The topics span across all the fields taught and researched at the Price School and in the past have included urban planning, real estate, the environment, politics, economics and public policy.

About Dr. Hom's Presentation "Since its establishment in the late 1800s, Los Angeles Chinatown has been a contested space, representing the tensions of inequitable urban development throughout the city. While changes to the urban landscape have contributed to threats of displacement and disappearance for decades, Chinatown has persisted, largely due to the ongoing engagement and work of generations of community leaders who have been committed to community development and preservation efforts. Yet, not all community leaders have the same vision and approaches, which has also led to conflict about who ultimately benefits from neighborhood change. These tensions reflect the class, generational, immigration, intracultural, and political ideological differences that have come to define the Chinese American community."

About the Book: One of the most divisive issues in recent progressive politics has been what role, if any, allies might legitimately play in other people's movements. Despite the significance of this debate, it has taken place in a historical vacuum.

In Black Power, White Heat: From Solidarity Politics to Radical Chic, the Sixties historian Alice Echols explores what happened some sixty years ago when whites and Blacks came together in the fight against racism. She tells this story by focusing on two Black-led organizations that bookend the Sixties: The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the Black Panther Party. In SNCC, whites were, in part, meant to generate a "white heat" so searing it would accelerate change. Results were mixed, and white activists formed new movements, from women's liberation to draft resistance.

By 1967, the Black Panther Party was advancing its own unique brand of "revolutionary nationalism", and seeking out white supporters. Partnering with whites brought the group visibility and resources, but it also put the Panthers at odds with other Black radicals, with unfortunate consequences.

Black Power, White Heat explains how solidarity lost credibility, and not just from within the movement. Here, the FBI played a key role, and so did the discourse of "radical chic", advanced most effectively by the journalist Tom Wolfe. Still, even as Black-white solidarity lost steam, it was not entirely played out. In some of the era's most important political trials, even courtrooms became sites of solidarity as predominantly white juries returned verdicts that suggested they trusted Black Panther defendants more than the District Attorneys prosecuting them. Clear-eyed about the difficulties of solidarity, Black Power, White Heat nonetheless emphasizes the achievements and considerable promise of uniting across difference, and in ways that will inform and deepen current debates roiling progressive politics.

About the Author: Alice Echols is Barbra Streisand Professor of Contemporary Gender Studies and Professor of History and Gender and Sexuality Studies at USC. She is the author of six books including most recently Shortfall: Family Secrets, Financial Collapse, and a Hidden History of American Banking (The New Press, 2017) and Black Power, White Heat: From Solidarity Politics to Radical Chic, forthcoming in November 2025 from Oxford University Press.

Maybe you are frustrated by a dirty parking lot at Costco or the grocery store? Maybe you think you would love to go to a park more if it was a bit cleaner? Maybe you wish your bus stop had less trash lying around? Maybe you have noticed a spot on campus that could use a little TLC? Or maybe you want to go to a specific beach?

EXHIBITION STATEMENT

Enigmatic Hue presents a body of work featuring an amalgamation of paintings and sculptors. One component of the exhibition is large scale abstract paintings; emblems of work transposed into craft from the Gullah Geechie sweet grass basket culture. In conversation with a series of indigo blue portraits that reflect identity, spirituality, and endurance. Indigo, once a symbol of labor and exploitation, becomes a pigment of resistance and memory in its deep hue, a metaphor for the layered histories embedded in skin, water, and land. In tandem with painting, I am exploring glass-fused surfaces, transforming painterly gestures into translucent layers that echo both fragility and permanence.

This body of work delves deeply into the connections between the broader diasporic communities. My research is centered around the exploration of Gullah Geechee cultural traditions. Said traditions include sweetgrass basket weaving, use of blue glass as a form of spiritual protection, and the interplay between the histories of rice and cotton cultivation. These material and histories form a conceptual foundation that connects my own ancestral narrative to the broader legacies of Black labor, resistance, survival, and creativity in the American South. ABOUT THE ARTIST

Bridget DeLee is a Los Angeles based artist, whose practice primarily spans painting and mixed media sculpture. She frequently incorporates materials with cultural significance to Los Angeles and the broader African diaspora. DeLee’s paintings interrelate with a limited color palette and skin pigment that displaces realism, shifting focus to inherent meaning and spiritual depth. Her work is inspired by family photos, urban changes, and sociopolitical themes like race, equity, and displacement. Her recent research and practice concentrated on South Carolina, emphasizing the customary art and practices retained by the Gullah Geechee people.

DeLee’s work has been exhibited at Durden and Ray, VAMA Gallery, The Mistake Room, Track16, Sovern LA and Band of Vices. As an emerging artist, she has contributed to discussions on panels such as Art & Activism: Through the African American Experience. Her sculpture “In Between” was featured in the Los Angeles Times article. Her recognitions include the Winston Russell Hewitt Scholarship, VAMA Scholarship Award, and the Macomber travel grant from USC Roski. DeLee holds a B.A. in Studio Art from California State University- Dominquez Hills. She is a Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Fellow. Presently, she is a Master of Fine Art candidate at the USC.

In this talk, Viriya Yoo (PhD candidate in English, USC) discusses several notable cultural works about the Cambodian Genocide that span genres, including memoir, documentary film, theater, and literary fiction (novels and short stories). Produced primarily by diasporic Cambodian creators, these works examine not only the legacy of genocide, but also of refugeehood and exile. With the passage of time and the maturation of the post-memorial generation, she traces new trends in cultural production, and with it, evolving understandings of survivorship.

Topic: Zoox is building all-electric, fully autonomous, purpose-built vehicles to cities to make transportation cleaner, safer and more enjoyable. Zoox believes that the full realization of autonomous mobility requires a vehicle that is fully designed for AI to drive and humans to enjoy. The company has been working on its custom vehicle and driving systems since 2014 and is the only company to have purpose-built robotaxis driving on public roads today. This talk will focus on why this approach is different from what other companies are doing as well as discuss some of the policy challenges faced by the industry.

About the Speaker:

Phillip Pierce is Zoox’s City Policy Lead, where he is responsible for city policy and government engagement across all US markets for the all-electric, autonomous vehicle company. Prior to joining Zoox, he managed public affairs and government relations at the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), working on many of San Francisco's largest transportation planning and construction projects. He holds a master’s degrees in Public Administration/Public Policy from the University of Southern California and in Social Work from CalPoly Humboldt. He lives in San Francisco with his wife and son.

DESCRIPTION:
Nike’s recently retired Chief Innovation Officer, John Hoke, now the Chairman of the Board at MillerKnoll, will discuss the power and possibility of design and creativity throughout the world. Following an introduction by award-winning architect Mark Rios, Hoke will be in conversation with Brett Steele, dean of the USC School of Architecture.

As Chief Design Officer for 15 years, Hoke was responsible for envisioning the future of sport and directed an international creative community of more than 1,000 designers charged with inspiring and innovating while designing hundreds of apparel and footwear styles each year. Every item Hoke played a role in creating encapsulated a story, a data-backed purpose, and a sense of progress. Hoke worked with Nike for more than 30 years before his retirement in 2025. Prior to Nike, Hoke was a designer at Michael Graves Architecture & Design in Princeton, New Jersey. His work included architectural, industrial, and graphic design for a wide variety of international clients.

“The only constant we have is change,” says Hoke. “Designers are here on the planet to keep making progress. In whatever field you have, whatever industry, whatever focus you have, it should be about progressing the lovely human experience forward more equitably, more sustainably, opening the aperture to all.”

This event marks the third installment of Crossing Design Borders, an annual speaker series supported by an endowment established in 2023 at the USC School of Architecture to advance interdisciplinary design. The series brings together professionals who work across boundaries and disciplines to create, innovate, and think differently about the built environment.

Pretty Ugly interrogates how taste is constructed—challenging binaries of pretty/ugly, good/bad, and timeless/expired—by reframing everyday objects as critical sites of value, power, and visibility. Through installation, the project invites viewers to question who decides what is “good design,” and why.

To volunteer, fill out the Google Form (https://forms.gle/41swp9F3fgq44oCW8). Based on your responses, we will help organize clusters of volunteers to go to certain locations together. We will offer supplies to be picked up on campus. We will ask for a "before" and "after" shot of your location, as well as a photo of you with your collected items.

We will highlight two winners (groups or individuals) of the event within three categories: TOMMY (Team undergrads), TRAVELER (Team grad students) and FIGHT ON (Team faculty, staff and postdocs). Winners will earn fame and glory on campus, and maybe a prize!

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

All around the world we’ve been drawing suns in the top corner of our pages. Oh how tender it is when our corners align! First one big, full, sun. Then many suns. And underneath it all, we’re holding hands.

We begin with a 650-square-foot unstretched canvas that lived outside as much as it did inside. It was often dragged around with the help of good friends and kind strangers. Time collapses on this scale. Fast remembers slow. Big returns to small. Cartoonish snuggles up to drippy. And classical is learning to live with messy. Nearby, theatrical objects and playful movements are narratively entangled with the painting, and turn the rest of the gallery into a theatre, a house party, and in my wildest dreams, a forest.

Using the “fourth wall” as a medium, The Last Corner Sun wrestles with how chaos and intimacy interact on both closely personal and absurdly existential levels.

Professor Thompson is a specialist in eighteenth-century British and transatlantic literature, philosophy, the history of science, and feminism. She is currently the Dibner Distinguished Fellow in the History of Science and Technology at the Huntington Library. During her time at the Huntington, she is working on a book, "Artifice: Science and Antirealism, 1665-1695," that explores how experimental chymistry's capacity to simulate nature complicates the relationship between science and lifelike representation. Her project extends to genres like travel narrative and criminal biography, which base their representational truth-claims on material reality not directly accessible to the senses. Her EMSI seminar paper title is "Pawnship, Enslavement, and Literary History: Oroonoko, the Royal African, and the Royal African Company Letters."

EXHIBITION STATEMENT

Enigmatic Hue presents a body of work featuring an amalgamation of paintings and sculptors. One component of the exhibition is large scale abstract paintings; emblems of work transposed into craft from the Gullah Geechie sweet grass basket culture. In conversation with a series of indigo blue portraits that reflect identity, spirituality, and endurance. Indigo, once a symbol of labor and exploitation, becomes a pigment of resistance and memory in its deep hue, a metaphor for the layered histories embedded in skin, water, and land. In tandem with painting, I am exploring glass-fused surfaces, transforming painterly gestures into translucent layers that echo both fragility and permanence.

This body of work delves deeply into the connections between the broader diasporic communities. My research is centered around the exploration of Gullah Geechee cultural traditions. Said traditions include sweetgrass basket weaving, use of blue glass as a form of spiritual protection, and the interplay between the histories of rice and cotton cultivation. These material and histories form a conceptual foundation that connects my own ancestral narrative to the broader legacies of Black labor, resistance, survival, and creativity in the American South. ABOUT THE ARTIST

Bridget DeLee is a Los Angeles based artist, whose practice primarily spans painting and mixed media sculpture. She frequently incorporates materials with cultural significance to Los Angeles and the broader African diaspora. DeLee’s paintings interrelate with a limited color palette and skin pigment that displaces realism, shifting focus to inherent meaning and spiritual depth. Her work is inspired by family photos, urban changes, and sociopolitical themes like race, equity, and displacement. Her recent research and practice concentrated on South Carolina, emphasizing the customary art and practices retained by the Gullah Geechee people.

DeLee’s work has been exhibited at Durden and Ray, VAMA Gallery, The Mistake Room, Track16, Sovern LA and Band of Vices. As an emerging artist, she has contributed to discussions on panels such as Art & Activism: Through the African American Experience. Her sculpture “In Between” was featured in the Los Angeles Times article. Her recognitions include the Winston Russell Hewitt Scholarship, VAMA Scholarship Award, and the Macomber travel grant from USC Roski. DeLee holds a B.A. in Studio Art from California State University- Dominquez Hills. She is a Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Fellow. Presently, she is a Master of Fine Art candidate at the USC.

Melissa Reynolds is a historian of early modern Europe with research interests in the history of medicine and science, the history of the body, and the history of material texts. She teaches courses on the history of later medieval and early modern Europe, on the history of science, and on the history of communications technologies. Her presentation is titled: "Making their Mark: Manuscripts and Medical Authority in Later Medieval and Early Modern England."

Today, the Manzanar Baseball Project is breathing new life into this powerful legacy by restoring the historic baseball diamond at Manzanar National Historic Site, turning history into a living field of remembrance.

Join us for an unforgettable afternoon as multifaceted artist and project director Dan Kwong shares exclusive video footage of the diamond’s restoration and commemorative games, and performs his original work, “The Return of the Samurai Centerfielder.” Dan will be joined by two trailblazers in the field of Japanese American history and baseball:

Susan H. Kamei, USC Adjunct Professor (Teaching) of History and author of When Can We Go Back to America?, who will explore how baseball shaped identity and resilience within the camps.Kerry Yo Nakagawa, founder of the Nisei Baseball Research Project and author of Through A Diamond: 100 Years of Japanese American Baseball, who will trace the rich history of Japanese American ballplayers and how their legacy resonates from dusty camp fields to the LA stadiums of today’s Japanese baseball stars.
This program will open with Dan Kwong’s performance and video presentation, including national and international news coverage of the first commemorative game played in October 2024. Another commemorative double-header is already in the works for October 2025. Following the screening, Dan will moderate a conversation with Kerry Yo and Susan, delving into the enduring impact of Japanese American baseball across generations and continents.

This event will be in-person only—don’t miss the chance to witness how a simple game of baseball continues to bridge history, memory, and identity.

Professor Hackel's research focuses on the Spanish Borderlands, the American West, colonial California, and California Indians. He is especially interested in Native responses to colonialism, the effects of disease on colonial encounters, and new ways of visualizing these processes through digital history. His current work involves a study of immigration and community formation in California before 1850. His EMSI seminar paper title is "The Materiality of Spanish California."

In this fast-moving kaleidoscope, more than a hundred characters try to make sense of what they know. Featuring the BFA in Acting for Stage and Screen Junior Class.

Second Stage Productions put the spotlight on the actors and the text. They are unique learning experiences for students, giving the BFA Acting and Musical Theatre students performance opportunities that demand a heightened focus on the craft and a deeper connection to the text and with their cohort. All around the world we’ve been drawing suns in the top corner of our pages. Oh how tender it is when our corners align! First one big, full, sun. Then many suns. And underneath it all, we’re holding hands.

We begin with a 650-square-foot unstretched canvas that lived outside as much as it did inside. It was often dragged around with the help of good friends and kind strangers. Time collapses on this scale. Fast remembers slow. Big returns to small. Cartoonish snuggles up to drippy. And classical is learning to live with messy. Nearby, theatrical objects and playful movements are narratively entangled with the painting, and turn the rest of the gallery into a theatre, a house party, and in my wildest dreams, a forest.

Using the “fourth wall” as a medium, The Last Corner Sun wrestles with how chaos and intimacy interact on both closely personal and absurdly existential levels.

This conversation will take place on Monday, April 6 from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. It will explore Peter’s research on the structural forces that have preceded periods of unrest throughout history, including rising inequality, elite overproduction, and declining trust in institutions. Drawing on centuries of comparative data, the conversation will examine what these patterns may reveal about contemporary politics, and whether understanding them can help societies avoid future instability.

About End Times: Elites, Counter-Elites, and the Path of Political Disintegration: End Times argues that societies become unstable when elite numbers grow faster than available power and resources, producing frustrated “counter-elites” who challenge the existing order. Peter Turchin uses historical data to show how elite overproduction, economic inequality, and declining state capacity interact to drive cycles of polarization and unrest. He warns that without reforms to rebalance these forces, modern democracies risk prolonged periods of political breakdown rather than sudden collapse.

Prior to assuming the helm of the Sloan Foundation in January 2026, Dr. Bloom led the research planning, strategy, commercialization, and operations across all fields of discovery at New York University, including its many schools, colleges and global campuses. During her tenure, Bloom focused on driving research excellence, increasing the number of research-active faculty, facilitating entrepreneurship and innovation, and dramatically increasing research partnerships.

Dr. Bloom is scheduled to speak to the role of philanthropy in supporting higher education — and science, more broadly — in not just surviving, but thriving, through the challenging times facing many colleges and universities.

“Stacie Bloom has a unique and powerful perspective for the 2026 Pullias Lecture,” noted Pullias Center co-director Julie Posselt. “Her sustained intellectual leadership is very much aligned with the Pullias Center’s strategy of advancing public and private research relationships to benefit higher education and society.”

Dr. Bloom joins a long list of esteemed speakers for the Pullias Lecture, which this year will be held at USC’s Town and Gown Ballroom. Past Pullias Lecture speakers include SUNY Chancellor John B. King, (then) UC President Janet Napolitano, and Shirley Malcom of AAAS. The first Pullias Lecture, held in 1979, featured Norman Topping M.D., who served as president of USC from 1958-1970, and chancellor from 1971-1979.

Organized by the USC Dornsife Center for Advanced Genocide Research

In the span of roughly 100 days in 1994, an estimated one million people were systematically murdered in Rwanda. While the genocide unfolded with extraordinary speed and brutality, it did so in full view of the international community. Foreign governments, peacekeepers, and global institutions were present in Rwanda in various capacities. Yet their inactions and silences became as consequential as the violence itself.

In this talk, undergraduate student Francesco Micaletti-Hinojal explores how Rwandans perceived foreign actors during and after the 1994 genocide. The research draws on testimonies from the Visual History Archive in which survivors and witnesses discuss key international actors such as the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR), the French government, and the United States. His analysis of these testimonies reveal not only deep frustration with international inaction but also a complex and sometimes contradictory range of perspectives.

These archival findings are complemented by original fieldwork Micaletti-Hinojal conducted in Rwanda in December 2025. During this period, he conducted interviews in Kigali, Rwanda with genocide survivors, Rwandan academics, NGO workers, and diplomats. He also made site visits to national memorials and documentation centers, including the Kigali Genocide Memorial, in order to better understand how international actors are discussed within contemporary memory practices. In examining how these memories persist and shift, the study underscores the importance of historical perception in shaping early warning, response, and prevention efforts in contexts of mass violence.

Francesco Micaletti-Hinojal is an undergraduate at the University of Southern California, where he studies Politics, Philosophy, and Law. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Lambda Delta and has earned a place on the Dean’s List every semester of his undergraduate career. He has held internships at the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See and at the Permanent Mission of Panama during its tenure on the UN Security Council. In these roles, he contributed to research and drafting on peacekeeping, conflict prevention, and humanitarian response. A multilingual speaker of English, French, Spanish, and Italian, Francesco intends to pursue graduate study and a career in foreign policy, international organizations, or academia, with a focus on atrocity prevention and international accountability. Ingrid Schaffner is an American curator, writer, and educator whose work coalesces around themes of archiving and collecting, photography, feminism, and alternate modernisms—especially Surrealism. She led the curatorial programs of the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), Univeristy of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia (2000—2015); and the Chinati Foundation, Marfa, Texas (2020—2023). She is the curator of the 2018 Carnegie International, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh. In 2024, she joined Hauser & Wirth as Curatorial Senior Director; her exhibition project Destiny Is a Rose: The Eileen Harris Norton Collection will be on view at Hauser & Wirth Downtown Los Angeles February 24—August 16, 2026. Schaffner is the co-author of the forthcoming book In the Company of Artists: A History of Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture (Hirmer 2026).

EXHIBITION STATEMENT

Enigmatic Hue presents a body of work featuring an amalgamation of paintings and sculptors. One component of the exhibition is large scale abstract paintings; emblems of work transposed into craft from the Gullah Geechie sweet grass basket culture. In conversation with a series of indigo blue portraits that reflect identity, spirituality, and endurance. Indigo, once a symbol of labor and exploitation, becomes a pigment of resistance and memory in its deep hue, a metaphor for the layered histories embedded in skin, water, and land. In tandem with painting, I am exploring glass-fused surfaces, transforming painterly gestures into translucent layers that echo both fragility and permanence.

This body of work delves deeply into the connections between the broader diasporic communities. My research is centered around the exploration of Gullah Geechee cultural traditions. Said traditions include sweetgrass basket weaving, use of blue glass as a form of spiritual protection, and the interplay between the histories of rice and cotton cultivation. These material and histories form a conceptual foundation that connects my own ancestral narrative to the broader legacies of Black labor, resistance, survival, and creativity in the American South. ABOUT THE ARTIST

Bridget DeLee is a Los Angeles based artist, whose practice primarily spans painting and mixed media sculpture. She frequently incorporates materials with cultural significance to Los Angeles and the broader African diaspora. DeLee’s paintings interrelate with a limited color palette and skin pigment that displaces realism, shifting focus to inherent meaning and spiritual depth. Her work is inspired by family photos, urban changes, and sociopolitical themes like race, equity, and displacement. Her recent research and practice concentrated on South Carolina, emphasizing the customary art and practices retained by the Gullah Geechee people.

DeLee’s work has been exhibited at Durden and Ray, VAMA Gallery, The Mistake Room, Track16, Sovern LA and Band of Vices. As an emerging artist, she has contributed to discussions on panels such as Art & Activism: Through the African American Experience. Her sculpture “In Between” was featured in the Los Angeles Times article. The Los Angeles shoreline is one of the most iconic natural landscapes in the United States, if not the world. Yet, in the early twentieth century Angelenos routinely lamented the city’s crowded, polluted, and eroded sands, many of which were private and thus inaccessible to the public. Between the 1920s and the 1960s, LA’s engineers, city officials, urban planners, and business elite worked together to transform the relatively untouched beaches into modern playgrounds for the white middle class. The members of this powerful “beach lobby” reinvented the beach experience for the suburban age, effectively preventing a much-feared “white flight” from the coast. But as they opened up vast public spaces for many Angelenos to express themselves, show off their bodies, and forge alternative communities, they made clear that certain groups of beachgoers, including African Americans, gay men and women, and bodybuilders, were no longer welcome. Sand Rush not only uncovers how the Los Angeles coastline was literally constructed but also how this major planning and engineering project affected the lives of ordinary city-dwellers and transformed global expectations of what a beach should look and feel like. As the ongoing climate crisis threatens coastal communities around the world, the story of LA’s beaches bring to the fore how much we have transformed our environments and what we stand to lose if we do not put an end to our fossil fuel addiction.

Elsa Devienne is Assistant Professor of History at Northumbria University in the UK. She is a specialist of the twentieth-century United States with expertise in environmental history, urban history, the history of the body and, more recently, the history of waste. Her first book, Sand Rush, was initially published in French (Sorbonne Editions, 2020) before coming out in English in an augmented version with a new epilogue (Oxford University Press, 2024). The book won the 2021 Willi Paul Adams Award awarded by the Organization of American Historians, the 2025 Arthur Miller First Book Prize, and the 2025 W. Turrentine Jackson Award.

Seminar by Rachael Bay (UC Davis)

Abstract:

With the rapid pace of human-induced environmental change, it is increasingly clear that evolution will play a role in the persistence of species and ecosystems in the coming decades. However, our understanding of genetic mechanisms governing variation in response to environmental perturbations, espeically in marine systems, is limited. In this talk I discuss how my lab is combining ecological experiments with genomic sequencing to develop a predictive understanding of the links between genomic variation and resilience in marine foundation species, scaling from individuals to ecosystems.

In conjunction with the USC School of Dramatic Arts’ production of Legally Blonde, join us for an exploration of how costume design reflects and amplifies the beloved figure and feminist icon of cinema and musical theatre, Elle Woods. Costume designer and USC dramatic arts professor Ann Closs-Farley will lead a conversation with USC Roski professor Jenny Lin, USC Gould School of Law professor Camille Gear Rich, TV host/producer Pink Lady (Pink Lady Presents), and Ellie Hermann, student designer for SDA's production of Legally Blonde. They will break down how fashion is used as a narrative device in Elle’s journey. Expressing herself through color, clothing, and hairstyles, she uplifts feminine aesthetics in male-dominated environments and demonstrates the power that comes from embracing one’s authentic self.

The illuminating panel discussion will be followed by a fashion show featuring original interpretations of Elle Woods’ looks designed by USC students.

Bio:

Ann Closs-Farley is an assistant professor of costume design at the USC School of Dramatic Arts who designs costumes across the country and around the world for film, theater, television, opera, and print. Credits include The Pee-wee Herman Show (Broadway), Toy Story: The Musical (Disney), What About Dick? (Netflix), The Bourne Stuntacular (Universal Studios), Because of Charley (Renaissance Entertainment), St. Valentines Massacre (National Geographic), Pirates of the Caribbean: Eye of The Storm (Disneyland Shanghai), Sail Away (Carnival Cruise Line), TWA @ JFK (Connie Cocktail Bar), Twelfth Night (Guthrie Theater), Zoot Suit (Mark Taper Forum), Hopscotch: A Mobile Opera (The Industry), The Cunning Little Vixen (The Industry and Cleveland Orchestra), Around the World in 80 Days (Cleveland Playhouse), and many more. Closs-Farley is also a longtime member of The Actors’ Gang and evidEnce Room theater companies. In addition to winning the Sherwood Award for Emerging Artists, Closs-Farley has received Ovation Awards, L.A. Weekly Awards, Backstage Garlands, and L.A. Drama Critics Circle Awards.

Jenny Lin is Director of the MA Program in Curatorial Practices and the Public Sphere and Associate Professor of Critical Studies in USC’s Roski School of Art and Design. As an art historian, writer, and curator, Professor Lin explores relations between modern and contemporary art and design and social phenomena such as urbanization and globalization. She is author of Above Sea: Contemporary Art, Urban Culture, and the Fashioning of Global Shanghai (Manchester University Press, 2019) and is writing a new book, Global Art/Fashion System: New Silk Roads Connecting China, Italy, and the United States, supported by the 2024-2025 Tsao Family Rome Prize. Professor Lin’s research and exhibitions have been supported by numerous additional fellowships and grants, including from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, UC Pacific Rim Research Program, and UO Center for Asian and Pacific Studies. Her art criticism and essays have appeared widely in publications such as Art Margins, Shanghai Culture, Frieze, Flash Art, X-TRA, Konturen, ArtReview, Fandom as Methodology, Participatory Urbanisms, Urban Imaginaries, Cities of Light, and Aesthetics of Gentrification.

Camille Gear Rich joined the USC Gould School of Law faculty in the fall of 2007 following five years of private practice. Her research and teaching interests include constitutional law, feminist legal theory, family law, children and the law and the First Amendment. She is the founder and director of PRYSM: The USC Initiative for the Study of Race, Gender, Sexuality and the Law. She is also the founding director of Gould’s First Generation Legal Professionals program. Rich is widely know for her research on law, discrimination and identity formation issues related to race, class, gender and sexuality. Ellie Hermann is a senior at the University of Southern California, studying Costume Design. Pursuing a career in costume design has been a passion of hers for as long as she can remember. Ellie got her start in theatre at the age of eight with the Creative Kids Playhouse Children’s Theatre of Orange County. She then followed her passion throughout high school and into college. During her time at USC, she has developed a strong foundation in script analysis, visual storytelling, and collaborative design processes. She has designed for theatre, film, ballet, and concert bands.

In this special presentation for USC Thornton School of Music, James Conlon, world-renowned maestro and longtime music director of Los Angeles Opera, traces how a composer who deeply respected the distinctions between tragic and comic opera ultimately returned to a challenge that had once frustrated him. Drawing on musical insight, historical context, and a lifetime of experience on the podium, Conlon explores how patience, artistic maturity, and Shakespeare’s enduring influence led Verdi to Falstaff, the most sophisticated comic opera in the Italian tradition. Part lecture, part listening session, Maestro Conlon leads us through this sonic journey of one of the great operas.

ABOUT JAMES CONLON

James Conlon is one of the most esteemed and influential conductors of his generation, a rare figure whose work has shaped classical music life in the United States and Europe for more than five decades. Since his debut with the New York Philharmonic in 1974, he has led nearly every major American and European orchestra and appeared at many of the world’s leading opera houses. Equally at home in symphonic, operatic, and choral repertoire, he is widely recognized for his versatility. Through extensive touring, recordings, writings, and public lectures, he has become a prominent voice in the broader cultural conversation about music.

Conlon serves as Music Director of LA Opera through the end of his 20th season in June 2026, by which time he will have conducted approximately 525 performances; he then becomes Conductor Laureate. He previously held leadership posts as Music Director of the Ravinia Festival, summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (2005–2015), and the Cincinnati May Festival (1979–2016). Since his 1976 debut, he has led more than 270 performances at the Metropolitan Opera. He was Principal Conductor of the Paris National Opera from 1995-2004, Music Director of the Gûrzenich Orchestra and Cologne Opera (1989-2002) and the Rotterdam Philharmonic 1983-1991, and Principal Conductor of the RAI National Symphony Orchestra (2016-2020).

A noted advocate for composers suppressed by the Nazi regime, Conlon is also a champion of public scholarship and cultural institutions as forums for civic dialogue. His many honors include four Grammy Awards, France’s Légion d’Honneur, Italy’s Commendatore of the Order of Merit, and Austria’s Cross of Honor for Science and Art.

EXHIBITION STATEMENT

Enigmatic Hue presents a body of work featuring an amalgamation of paintings and sculptors. One component of the exhibition is large scale abstract paintings; emblems of work transposed into craft from the Gullah Geechie sweet grass basket culture. In conversation with a series of indigo blue portraits that reflect identity, spirituality, and endurance. Indigo, once a symbol of labor and exploitation, becomes a pigment of resistance and memory in its deep hue, a metaphor for the layered histories embedded in skin, water, and land. In tandem with painting, I am exploring glass-fused surfaces, transforming painterly gestures into translucent layers that echo both fragility and permanence.

This body of work delves deeply into the connections between the broader diasporic communities. My research is centered around the exploration of Gullah Geechee cultural traditions. Said traditions include sweetgrass basket weaving, use of blue glass as a form of spiritual protection, and the interplay between the histories of rice and cotton cultivation. These material and histories form a conceptual foundation that connects my own ancestral narrative to the broader legacies of Black labor, resistance, survival, and creativity in the American South. ABOUT THE ARTIST

Bridget DeLee is a Los Angeles based artist, whose practice primarily spans painting and mixed media sculpture. She frequently incorporates materials with cultural significance to Los Angeles and the broader African diaspora. DeLee’s paintings interrelate with a limited color palette and skin pigment that displaces realism, shifting focus to inherent meaning and spiritual depth. Her work is inspired by family photos, urban changes, and sociopolitical themes like race, equity, and displacement. Her recent research and practice concentrated on South Carolina, emphasizing the customary art and practices retained by the Gullah Geechee people.

DeLee’s work has been exhibited at Durden and Ray, VAMA Gallery, The Mistake Room, Track16, Sovern LA and Band of Vices. As an emerging artist, she has contributed to discussions on panels such as Art & Activism: Through the African American Experience. Her sculpture “In Between” was featured in the Los Angeles Times article. Her recognitions include the Winston Russell Hewitt Scholarship, VAMA Scholarship Award, and the Macomber travel grant from USC Roski. DeLee holds a B.A. in Studio Art from California State University- Dominquez Hills. She is a Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Fellow. USC students are invited to join an afternoon of docent-led tours of the powerful exhibition, MONUMENTS. Co-organized and co-presented by The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and The Brick, MONUMENTS marks the recent wave of monument removals as a historic moment. The exhibition reflects on the histories and legacies of post-Civil War America as they continue to resonate today, bringing together a selection of decommissioned monuments, many of which are Confederate, with contemporary artworks borrowed and newly created for the occasion. Removed from their original outdoor public context, the monuments in the exhibition will be shown in their varying states of transformation, from unmarred to heavily vandalized. For this Experience L.A. event, students will visit the full exhibition at both The Brick and MOCA on the same afternoon.

MONUMENTS considers the ways public monuments have shaped national identity, historical memory, and current events. Following the racially motivated mass shooting at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC (2015) and the deadly 'Unite the Right' rally organized by white nationalists in Charlottesville, VA (2017), alongside Bree Newsome’s powerful removal of the Confederate flag at the South Carolina Statehouse (2015), the United States witnessed the decommissioning of nearly 200 monuments. These removals prompted a national debate that remains ongoing. MONUMENTS aims to historicize these discussions in our current moment and provide a space for crucial discourse and active engagements about challenging topics.

Additional artworks by Leonardo Drew, Torkwase Dyson, Nona Faustine, Jon Henry, Hugh Mangum, Martin Puryear, Andres Serrano, and Hank Willis Thomas, are borrowed from private collectors and institutions.

The exhibition presents decommissioned monuments borrowed from the City of Baltimore, Maryland; the City of Montgomery, Alabama; The Jefferson School for African American Heritage, Charlottesville, Virginia; the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia, Richmond; the Valentine, Richmond, Virginia; and The Daniels Family Charitable Foundation, Raleigh, North Carolina. By juxtaposing these objects with contemporary works, the exhibition expands the context in which they are understood and highlights the gaps and omissions in popular narratives of American history.

The exhibition presents decommissioned monuments borrowed from the City of Baltimore, Maryland; the City of Montgomery, Alabama; The Jefferson School for African American Heritage, Charlottesville, Virginia; the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia, Richmond; the Valentine, Richmond, Virginia; and The Daniels Family Charitable Foundation, Raleigh, North Carolina. By juxtaposing these objects with contemporary works, the exhibition expands the context in which they are understood and highlights the gaps and omissions in popular narratives of American history.

EXHIBITION STATEMENT

Enigmatic Hue presents a body of work featuring an amalgamation of paintings and sculptors. One component of the exhibition is large scale abstract paintings; emblems of work transposed into craft from the Gullah Geechie sweet grass basket culture. In conversation with a series of indigo blue portraits that reflect identity, spirituality, and endurance. Indigo, once a symbol of labor and exploitation, becomes a pigment of resistance and memory in its deep hue, a metaphor for the layered histories embedded in skin, water, and land. In tandem with painting, I am exploring glass-fused surfaces, transforming painterly gestures into translucent layers that echo both fragility and permanence.

This body of work delves deeply into the connections between the broader diasporic communities. My research is centered around the exploration of Gullah Geechee cultural traditions. Said traditions include sweetgrass basket weaving, use of blue glass as a form of spiritual protection, and the interplay between the histories of rice and cotton cultivation. These material and histories form a conceptual foundation that connects my own ancestral narrative to the broader legacies of Black labor, resistance, survival, and creativity in the American South. ABOUT THE ARTIST

Bridget DeLee is a Los Angeles based artist, whose practice primarily spans painting and mixed media sculpture. She frequently incorporates materials with cultural significance to Los Angeles and the broader African diaspora. DeLee’s paintings interrelate with a limited color palette and skin pigment that displaces realism, shifting focus to inherent meaning and spiritual depth. Her work is inspired by family photos, urban changes, and sociopolitical themes like race, equity, and displacement. Her recent research and practice concentrated on South Carolina, emphasizing the customary art and practices retained by the Gullah Geechee people.

DeLee’s work has been exhibited at Durden and Ray, VAMA Gallery, The Mistake Room, Track16, Sovern LA and Band of Vices. As an emerging artist, she has contributed to discussions on panels such as Art & Activism: Through the African American Experience. Her sculpture “In Between” was featured in the Los Angeles Times article. Her recognitions include the Winston Russell Hewitt Scholarship, VAMA Scholarship Award, and the Macomber travel grant from USC Roski. DeLee holds a B.A. in Studio Art from California State University- Dominquez Hills. She is a Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship Fellow. Presently, she is a Master of Fine Art candidate at the USC.

Description: We’re writing in a moment when clear standards of evidence are more important than ever. But knowing that evidence matters doesn’t mean it’s easy for writers to understand how to use it — especially when political and technological changes pit different kinds of arguments and evidence against each other. So, it’s more important than ever to ask: how do you know that a claim is true? How do you prove it? This event brings together writers with training in different fields — legal studies, history, creative writing, journalism, and literary studies — to ask: for you, what kinds of evidence count as proof? How do you make your case in a courtroom, in literary criticism, in history scholarship, in a book review, in a novel? We’ll talk about our own experiences of finding, arranging, and evaluating evidence — and we’ll share our ideas about explaining different forms of evidence to students.

Antonio Elefano joined USC’s Writing faculty in the fall of 2014. Before coming to USC, he was a corporate litigator in New York City and a writing fellow/visiting assistant professor at the University of Houston. A graduate of Yale Law School and the author of Legal Writing for the Undergraduate from Wolters Kluwer/Aspen, he is the Writing Program’s legal writing specialist, teaching WRIT 340: Moot Court, WRIT 320: Competitive Moot Court (focused on oral argumentation), WRIT 340: Legal Writing and WRIT 440: Advanced Legal Writing. He is the faculty advisor for Southern California Moot Court (which in 2024 was named the top school in the country in appellate brief writing and in 2025 won the national championship in brief writing), Phi Alpha Delta (USC’s pre-law fraternity), and the Survivor Support Community at USC. In 2024, he was awarded the USC Associates Award for Excellence in Teaching, the highest honor for teaching given at USC. That same year, he received his second USC Mentoring Award for Mentoring Undergraduates (his first was in 2019). Elefano is also a fiction writer whose stories have been published in The Los Angeles Review, 236 and The Journal. In August 2014, his story “Italy” was one of Buzzfeed’s “29 Short Stories You Need to Read in Your Twenties.”

Daniel Immerwahr (Ph.D., Berkeley, 2011) is Bergen Evans Professor in the Humanities and Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence. He is the author of Thinking Small (Harvard, 2015) and How to Hide an Empire (FSG, 2019), both of which have won scholarly awards. Immerwahr is a contributing writer for The New Yorker and his essays have also appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, The Atlantic, the Washington Post, Harper's, The New Republic, and the New York Review of Books, among other places. He is writing a fire history of the United States.

Professor Newman is a historian of early modern Britain and the British Atlantic, with current special interest in the history of slavery, the abolition movement, and the British royal family. She will discuss her new book, The Crown's Silence: The Hidden History of the British Monarchy and Slavery in the Americas (Mariner, January 2026). It's the first work to trace, in forensic detail, the monarchy's links to the transatlantic slave trade and colonial slavery across four centuries. From the 1560s to the abolition of the slave trade in 1807, the British monarchy invested in slaving ventures and built an Atlantic empire on the forced labor of millions of Africans. The Crown continued to profit from African bondage well into the nineteenth century--even as Britain crowned itself the leader of the global abolition movement.
