Casden Conversations is a scholarly initiative that aims to bring students, faculty, and the Greater Los Angeles community for a series of engaging discussions that explore various aspects of American Jewish life.


Shirin Raban, is an award winning designer, cine-ethnographer and educator. She creates films that address the topics of identity, culture, art and education. She directed the short film, "VAPAE: The Making of a Teaching Artist" for UCLA Arts and Architecture. Her Masters in Visual Anthropology is from USC. She is a lecturer at UCLA Extension and CSUN, where she teaches courses in the practice and history of graphic design. 

Dr. Saba Soomekh, is Associate Director of Research at UCLA's Alan D. Leve Center for Jewish Studies. She teaches Religious Studies, Middle Eastern History and Women's Studies courses. She received her BA in Religious Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. Her Masters in Theological Studies is from Harvard Divinity School and her Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
