California, the birthplace of film and incubator of technology, has been on the forefront of addressing central issues that have characterized American history, including immigration, economic inequality, declining labor markets, and changes in energy infrastructure. The Golden State has over the years provided solutions to these problems.

Historian Bill Deverell and sociologist Manuel Pastor, along with Vice Dean Steve Lamy, will discuss how a historical and cultural understanding of the evolution of California gives us a unique perspective on current national conflicts, and a window into a possible future United States.

All students are invited to participate in this lively conversation, the second event in the Dornsife Dialogues series.

The Dornsife Dialogues event series was launched by Dean Miller as a forum to explore complex ideas and promote civil discourse within the USC Dornsife community. Led by faculty from a range of fields within the letters, arts and sciences, the Dornsife Dialogues will examine issues of the moment with scholarly depth that affords new perspective and offers insight on the path ahead.
