Beyond the PhD is an annual conference designed to inspire and help studentss strategize for careers as future leaders in academia and industry. The event will feature keynote speakers, PhD and Postdoc career workshops, industry and academic career panels, and a networking reception. Graduate students and postdocs in all fields of research are welcome to attend! Breakfast and lunch will also be served. Currently enrolled graduate students and employed postdoctoral scholars, staff, and faculty from all fields of research at USC are welcome to attend.
Beyond the PhD 2017: Keynote Speakers
Dr. Claudia Aguirre
Dr. Claudia Aguirre is a neuroscientist and mind-body expert, specializing in the connection between the brain and the skin. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from UCLA and earned her Doctorate degree from the University of Southern California, where she investigated hormonal interactions in the aging brain. In between her studies, she researched molecular mechanisms of schizophrenia at the National Institute of Mental Health. She has also completed a certificate course on Yoga, Mindfulness and Social Change at Loyola Marymount University. Dr. Aguirre is a TEDx speaker and consults internationally in the health and wellness industries. Her clients include Unilever, Samsung, Red Bull, Dyson, and Davines, and she has current projects with TED Ed, NASA and the Global Wellness Institute.
Dr. Jonathan Whitmore
Jonathan Whitmore, PhD, is a Senior Data Scientist at Silicon Valley Data Science. He is the author of the O’Reilly screencast: Jupyter Notebook for Data Science Teams. And will be an Instructor at Stanford Continuing Studies Spring 2017. Jonathan is a regular conference and keynote speaker on career, science, and technical topics. He facilitated the transition between academia and the tech industry in 2014 through a Postdoctoral Fellow at Insight Data Science. Before moving into the tech industry, Dr. Whitmore worked as an astrophysicist in Melbourne, Australia, and he starred in the 3D IMAX astronomy documentary Hidden Universe. Dr. Whitmore received his PhD in physics from the University of California, San Diego (2011), and graduated magna cum laude from Vanderbilt University (2005) with a Bachelor of Science triple major in physics, philosophy, and mathematics.
