14th Annual Undergraduate Writers’ Conference

Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at 6:00pm to 9:00pm

Each year, outstanding undergraduate writers have the opportunity to submit their original work for consideration at the Undergraduate Writers' Conference.  Participants compete for prizes in four categories:

  • Analytical essay (single primary source, close reading)
  • Creative work (short story, screenplay, poetry)
  • Professional Writing/Moral Reasoning (papers about ethical dimensions of a discipline or profession, memos, white papers, professional ethics, media industry analysis, etc.)
  • Research essay (multiple sources, bibliography)

Students meet in small panel discussions (held in THH, VKC, etc.) to read excerpts from their work and gain insights from other participants and faculty moderators.  The conference culminates in an awards banquet where prizes are presented to the winners.  In each category, first prize is $1,000 and second prize is $500.

Entrants may also be considered for special prizes from the Levan Institute for Humanities & Ethics and the Schwarzenegger Institute for State & Global Policy.

This year’s guest speaker at the awards banquet is FRAN WILDE, science fiction and fantasy author and blogger.
